Mathew 25: 1- 13, the parable of the bridesmaids
VV 1-13, 1’’Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.6 “And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.
The context of this parable is the Jewish wedding. A wedding feast in the first century Israel involved the whole community and lasted for 7 days. During the 7 days, there would be a procession from the bride’s house with the bridegroom to the bridegroom’s house for the wedding feast. The 10 virgins were the bridesmaids waiting to join the procession when when bridegroom arrives. They carried torches to light up during the procession. Olive oil was required to keep the torches burning. The five foolish bridesmaid carried very little oil. The five wise bridesmaid carried a lot of oil. The bridegroom was delayed in coming but he finally came at midnight. The 5 wise bridesmaids who had sufficient oil went into the the procession and into wedding feast. The foolish bridesmaids who had insufficient oil were shut out. The foolish bridesmaids knew that the bridegroom will come but they were unprepared. They were foolish by the way they lived. Just by going to church doesn’t make anyone into a Christian. There are many unrepentant and unsaved people in churches today. When the bridegroom came, those who were ready were accepted, and those who were not ready were rejected. Do not put off a decision to accept Christ today. Tomorrow may be too late. Do not put off spiritual things to the last minute. Olive oil speaks of a relationship with Jesus. You cannot borrow someone else’ relationship with Jesus. You must develop your own relationship with Him. Build up a relationship with a Jesus today. Do not wait until the very last moment. It would be too late.
