Mark

Day 5
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, speak to us through our situation, our life, our emotions and our concerns. We come here today to learn from You, grow in grace, and mature in faith. Help us to change the way we think, to be conformed and transformed into the image of Your Son. Holy Spirit, we asked that You do Your work in our hearts to help, teach, shape, convict, correct, instruct and mould us, In Jesus’s name, Amen.

Mark 2: 1-14
VV 1- 2, ‘’And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. 2 Immediately many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them.’’

Jesus was still in Capernaum. The people heard that Jesus was in Peter’s house. Did people hear that Jesus was in your house? Immediately, the house was packed to the full until there was no more room left, not even at the door. Word spread fast. People came from all nooks and corners to meet Jesus, the teacher and miracle worker. Jesus preached the word of God to them. Did you teach and preach the word of God?Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10:17.

VV 3-5, Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. 4 And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

Four men brought a paralytic man to Jesus but they could not enter the house. In those days, a typical house had flat roofs with stairway on the side to reach the roof. These 4 men were men of faith. They carried the man to the roof, made a hole in the roof and lowered the man down to Jesus using a stretcher held by ropes. Jesus saw the 4 men’s faith and turned to the paralytic, ‘’Son, your sins are forgiven’’. In Judaism, it was commonly believed that when someone was sick it was due to sin. This man was healed by the the faith of his four friends, not by his own faith.

VV 6-12, And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

The Jews said that only God can forgive sin and they were correct. The Jews accused Jesus of blasphemy but they were wrong. Jesus had omniscient power. He knew what the Jews were thinking. Jesus asked the Jews, ‘’Which is easier to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’?’’ Jesus had power to forgive sin because He is God. Jesus had power to heal the paralytic man and made him walk because He is God. This miracle proved that Jesus is God because only God can forgive sin. Immediately he arose. Note the word, ‘ immediately ’ . The people were amazed and glorified God. The common people acknowledged Jesus as God but the Jews did not.

VV 13-14, Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them. 14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.” So he arose and followed Him.

Jesus went to the Sea of Galilee and taught the multitudes who were following Him. He saw Levi, the tax collector sitting at the tax office. Jesus called Levi to follow Him and he followed. Levi was also known as Matthew, the author of the gospel of Matthew.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are God. You came to forgive our sin, to heal our infirmities, to save us from death, and to give us eternal life. You came to give us abundant life, the ‘Zoe’ life, the God-kind of life, eternal life, abundant life, and life to the full. We acknowledged that Jesus is Son of God, Son of Man, Messiah, I AM, Yahweh, and the Great High priest, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
