Will God really dwell on earth?

John 1: 14
“14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father full of grace and truth.”

#1, “The Word became flesh.”
Jesus putting on human flesh is the mystery of the incarnation. God became incarnate (became flesh) by sending His one and only Son into the world to give us the salvation that we do not deserve. 2000 years ago, Jesus of Nazareth stepped out of time into human history! This is why Jesus is so amazing! Our calendar AD and BC is dated according to His birth. Easter and Christmas are celebrations to commemorate Him.

#2. “and made His dwelling among us.”
The Greek for word ‘dwelling’ is the word ‘tabernacle’. God ‘tabernacled’ among us. Tabernacle is a portable sanctuary with the Ark of the Covenant during the time of Moses in their wilderness wandering, Exodus 25-27. In 1000 BC, This tabernacle was replaced by the Solomon’s temple . When the temple was completed, Solomon asked in 1 Kings 8: 27, will God really dwell on earth? God’s reply to Solomon came 3000 years later, the Word ‘’made His dwelling among us’’. The tabernacle is a foreshadow of Jesus. John 2:19, ‘’destroy this temple and `I will raise it again in three days’’. Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. Matthew 18:20, “where two or three gather in my Name, there am I with them’’.

#3. “We have seen His glory”.
The apostle John saw the glory of Jesus, Son of God in a human body. Apostle John’s mother Salome and Jesus’ mother Mary were sisters. Apostle John and Jesus were cousins. Hence, John is a very reliable eye witness of Jesus’ glory.

#4. “the glory of the One and only Son who came from the Father, full of Grace and Truth”.

We need to be grace and truth people. Jesus lived in perfect Grace and perfect Truth. Grace and Truth walked among us. The Hebrew word for Grace and Truth is ‘Hesed’ and ‘Emet’ which means Unfailing Love and Faithfullness. This is reflected in the NLT translation where Unfailing Love and Faithfullness are used instead of Grace and Truth.

Lord, thank You for stepping out of time into human history. Thank You for the gift of Yourself coming to us in Grace and Truth. Thank You for tabernacling among us in grace and truth, Amen
