CHANGING WATER TO WINE

CHANGING WATER TO WINE
John 2: 6-11
‘’Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him”.

In those days, stone jars were used to store water for ritual washing. Jesus told the servants to fill the 6 stone jars with water and they filled them up to the brim until they overflowed. This was important so that no one could secretly add wine to them. The servants took some water to the master of the banquet and he tasted it. Wow! He exclaimed, what an excellent wine! He did not know that it was water that had changed into wine but the servants knew. A servant of God knows things that others don’t. If you want to know things first hand, serve in the ministry. The master of the banquet told the host, you saved the best for the last. Wine is a symbol of joy. Psalm 104.15, ‘’wine that gladdens the human hearts.” The changing of water into wine brought joy to the wedding feast. The host was spared the agony of embarrassment. Jesus changed 120 -180 gallons of water into wine! This was superabundant grace, God’s loving-kindness and faithfulness, “hesed” and “emet” (Hebrew). God’s provision is more than sufficient. 2 Cor 12:9, ‘’My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” ’This is the 1st sign and it was a private miracle. The public did not even know that a miracle had taken place. The disciples saw Jesus’ glory and believed. There are 7 signs and 7 ‘’I AM’’ in the gospel of John.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Jesus changed water into wine, a sign that points to Him as Deity. Thank You that out of His fullness, we have received grace upon grace, ”hesed” and ”emet”. We pray that You will provide for all our needs in the coming days, weeks, months, and years as we ride through the horrible storm of the COVID 19 pandemic, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
