A Tale of Two Adams
Romans 5: 12-21, A Tale of Two Adams
This is a tale of 2 Adams, one Adam failed, another Adam succeeded. The first Adam is from Genesis 1. The last Adam is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The words, sin, sinned, and sinner appeared 9 times in this passage. The words, gift, and grace also appeared 9 times. An outline of this passage is as follows; 1. Adam’s disobedience, VV 12-14, 2. Jesus’ obedience, VV 15-19, 3. Superabundant Grace, VV 20-21.
VV 12-14, 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
1. Adam’s disobedience:
Sin entered the world through Adam’s disobedience. He infected the human race with sin. As a result, sin entered, death entered, death spread, and death reigned. Sin was transmitted down to every generation from Adam, the head of humanity. God condemned the human race through Adam. God saved the human race through Jesus Christ. Adam is an anti-type of Jesus Christ.
We were born dead on arrival, spiritually dead and separated from God. Ephesian 2:1. ‘’ And you He made alive, who were dead in trespass and sins’’. Adam sinned by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. One single act of disobedience by one man resulted in death and depravity to the human race.
VV 15-19, 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
2. Christ’s Obedience:
Through the disobedience of Adam all had died, but through the obedience of Jesus Christ all can be saved. Sin resulted in eternal death, but grace resulted in eternal life. Judgment resulted in condemnation and eternal death, but grace resulted in justification, righteousness, and eternal life.
Jesus is the new head of humanity. His obedience brought eternal life to the human race. When Adam sinned and realised his nakedness, he covered himself with fig leaves, but God covered him with animal skin. God shed the blood of an innocent animal to cover his sin. Hebrews 9:22, “without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin’’. In the first atonement, God provided 1 lamb for 1 man. In Passover, God provided 1 lamb for 1 family. At Calvary, God provided 1 Lamb for the world, Jesus, the Lamb of God.
VV 20-21, 20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so, grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
3. Superabundant Grace:
Spiritual life comes through spiritual regeneration, a spiritual rebirth. John 3:3, ‘’ unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God’’. John 3:5, ‘’ unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he can not enter the kingdom of God’’. The law brought sin and death. Jesus brought grace, righteousness, and eternal life. Superabundant grace is ‘’ where sin abounded, grace abounded much more’’. The idea is, when the level of sin increased higher, the level of grace increased even higher.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the grace of salvation through a simple act of faith. We pray for those who have not received You as their Lord and Saviour that they will make a decision today, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
