Romans 8: 35-39, Everlasting Love
VV 35-39, 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: ‘’For Your sake, we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8 opened with no condemnation in verse 8:1 and closed with no separation in verse 8: 38. In verse 8:35, Paul asked his imaginary opponent another rhetorical question. ”Who shall separate us from the love of God”.
The core of God’s character is love. The theme of God’s love runs throughout the whole bible. God told the Israelites in Jer 31:3, ”I have loved you with an everlasting love”. In His holiness, we cannot approach God but in His love, He approached us by sending His Son Jesus to us. God’s love is mentioned three times. But God’s love can be threatened by painful life circumstances such as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword.
- What or who can separate us from the love of God? Paul listed out 7 painful experiences that could make us doubt God’s love, Tribulation, Distress, Persecution, etc. Paul quoted Psalm 44:22, ”Yet for Your sake, we are killed all day long, we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Persecution is nothing new or unusual. Throughout history and even now, God’s people had always been persecuted.
- In everything, we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. The phrase more than a conqueror in Greek Huper-Nikao, which means a super conqueror. No matter what happened, ultimately we will come out victorious through Christ. We are super conquerors by riding on Christ’s victory on the cross. He is the conqueror and we are His beneficiaries. 2 Cor 4:17, ”For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory”.
- Nothing can separate us from God’s love. Not even death, because the sting of death had been removed. Charles Spurgeon said death is not the house, just the porch. Not even angels, principalities, powers, present events, future events, height or depth, etc. Paul was fully convinced because he had experienced so many hardships in his life. Are you convinced? If hardships happened to you, will you stop loving God? Even if you stop loving God, God will never stop loving you. He loved you with an everlasting love.
Heavenly Father, thank You for this amazing truth that You loved us with an everlasting love. Thank you that we are super conquerors through Christ who loved us. We pray that you will not let any painful experiences separate us from Your love, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
