John 1: 15-18
15 (John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.’”)
John the Baptist testified concerning Jesus, saying that he preceded Jesus through birth, but Jesus preceded him through pre-existence.
“16 Out of His fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given”.
Christians received from Jesus, grace on top of grace, abundant grace, overflowing grace, favour on top favour, and spiritual blessing on top spiritual blessing.
“17 For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”.
The author of John compared Moses with Jesus, and Law with Grace. Moses was the giver of the Law. Jesus was Grace and Truth personified. Moses was a prophet of God, Jesus was God, John 1:1. Grace and Truth in Hebrew is “Hesed and Emet” which means Loving Kindness and Faithfulness.
“18 No one has even seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.”
Jesus is the message of God, delivered to us in a language that we could understand. The Greek word for “made known” is “exegiomai”. Jesus exegete God to us. He “is the image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15), “the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being”, Hebrews 1:3. “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father”, John 14:9.
