Day 34

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your wonderful word of truth and eternal life. Thank You for nourishing our soul, in Jesus name, Ame,

John 7:14-24, Feast of Tabernacles, Part 2.

VV 14-15, 14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”

Jesus came to the temple on the 4th day of the Feast of and taught the people. The Jews were amazed at His knowledge and authority on scriptures, for He was not educated in the Rabbinic school.

V 16-19, 16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?”

Jesus’ teaching came directly from God, His Father, but Jews did not believe. They considered Him an ordinary man, the son of Joseph, the carpenter, and Mary. A person who speaks God’s will, speaks the truth, and glorifies God. Are you doing God’s will and seeking after God’s glory? Moses gave them the law but they could not keep it. The 5th commandment outlawed killing but they plotted to kill Jesus.

V 20, “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”

Accusing Jesus of demon-possession was very insulting. Denying their intention to kill Jesus was a blatant lie.

V 21- 23, 21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath?

Since it was lawful for them to circumcise a Jewish male on the 8th day of life on a Sabbath, it should also be lawful to heal on a Sabbath

V 24, ‘’Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”

Jesus told the Jews to judge correctly in the matter of healing on a Sabbath. Circumcision, a mutilation of the flesh, on a Sabbath was lawful, but healing, a restoration of the body, on Sabbagh was unlawful.

Heavenly Father, please help us to be a student of Your word, seeking Your will and Your glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen
