Editorial Reviews

Danielle Peterson, 5/5

Story of Jacob: Genesis 26-36 by Dr. Andrew C. S. Koh, offers an inspiring and fresh perspective of the biblical character Jacob whose life of deception starts when his mother Rebekah forms a plan to deceive her husband and elder son, Esau. The plan is successful but the cost at which it comes is too a high a price and both mother and son find themselves paying dearly for their sins. But God is a merciful God and in time Jacob finds this to be true as God promises Jacob a life of posterity, nationhood, and wealth in exchange for his loyalty, devotion, and faithfulness. God stays true to is word but it takes a little while more before Jacob can fully give himself over to the Lord, repent for his sins, and right all the wrongs of the past.

Through Jacob’s struggles and hardships, Dr. Andrew not only reminds us of what God expects of us but offers insightful and thought-provoking questions regarding our works as Christians and our personal relationship with The Almighty. Dr. Andrew also deftly works through each chapter and offers additional commentary, as well as taking the time to offer reflections which aids the reader in understanding God’s wonderful work. If you are seeking a personal relationship with God, Life Story of Jacob: Genesis 26–36 is just the thing to get you started.

The Life Story of Jacob” delves into one of the most captivating narratives from the biblical book of Genesis – the life journey of the patriarch Jacob. Dr. Andrew Koh, the author, provides a fascinating exploration of Jacob’s spiritual awakening and his unwavering perseverance through a meticulous analysis of Genesis chapters 26-36. Through Jacob’s story, readers gain profound insight into overcoming adversity through faithful obedience to Christ.

Koh expertly unpacks the textual details, unveiling nuanced layers of meaning that shed light on Jacob’s trials and triumphs. Readers are granted an intimate acquaintance with Jacob as Koh seamlessly integrates historical context into the narrative. His analytical approach encourages deeper contemplation, surpassing the mere retelling of the story. Exegetical discussions and citations from external sources enrich the comprehension of Jacob’s journey. Koh masterfully weaves biblical threads through Jacob’s colorful tapestry, creating a cohesive and edifying narrative.

Central themes emerge, such as the struggle between the flesh and the spirit, as well as divine providence amid hardship. Koh underscores the certainty of Providence even in the face of human frailty. Jacob becomes the epitome of persevering faith amidst persecution, and Koh encourages readers to draw inspiration from Jacob’s victories through obedient devotion.

Whether for individual or group study, Koh’s work warrants a place in Christian libraries. His incisive insights and thought-provoking questions invite readers to revisit the text for fresh revelations. Koh brilliantly illuminates Jacob’s developmental journey towards greatness, offering it as an illustration for all who confront tests of character.

In summary, “The Life Story of Jacob” provides an illuminating narrative that encourages faithfulness in the midst of difficulty. Koh’s diligent exegesis and analysis transport readers into this transformative story, offering timely lessons for those seeking God’s guidance amid life’s challenges. His work is deserving of widespread discussion and recommendation. I would rate it 5 out of 5.

I will rate the book 3. It is entitled Life Story of Jacob and was written by Dr. Andrew C.S. Koh, who has published over 40 books and is a cardiologist and Bible teacher. Dr. Andrew analyzed Genesis, chapters 26 to 36, focusing on Jacob’s life, journeys, and spiritual growth to make the readers grow closer to God. There are eleven chapters in this book. In each chapter, it consists of different chapters. It will start with the particular verse, followed by the Reflection, followed by Application, and a Prayer.

When I first opened this book, I immediately remembered a Daily Devotion Book that was introduced to me by my aunt and uncle, who are both doctors. They recommended such a book when I was a child, and reading this book written by Dr. Andrew C.S. Koh brought me back to such happy memories.  Another thing that I really appreciate about the book is how well-structured it was written. A specific, clear format was followed, making it easier to read and understand.  It is also admirable for Dr. Andrew to allow his readers to access his writings and be open to honest feedback to grow as an author and an excellent publisher.

Some areas could have been improved. First, there should be a conclusion page before the About the Author page. As I delve in further, I realize there is an introduction but no conclusion. Having a conclusion page will create more symmetry in the totality of the book. Another thing is to enhance the application area. I suggest the writer ask some individuals if certain Biblical verses apply to their lives and write it under the application section. This can make readers think of life events that are similar to the Biblical verses. It will make the book more meaningful and leave a memory in their hearts.

I highly recommend such a book to any reader ages sixteen and above, regardless of their religion and the personal beliefs that they uphold to themselves.

Jern Weiss 4/5

I have been looking for a devotional that goes into detail about the verses as well as show how they apply to our daily lives; The Story of Jacob does exactly that.  I love reading these devotions every day.  It actually makes me want to read more each day, so I can learn more and grow more.  Jacob’s story is an interesting one, and Dr. Koh does a wonderful job of explaining the verses in detail, but in a way that is easy to understand.  He writes in a clear and concise manner, doesn’t fill each chapter with a lot of fluff or personal opinions.  It is very evident that Dr. Koh knows the subject matter and is an expert in theology.

The prayers at the end of each devotion are throughout and meaningful.  Regardless of when you read the devotions it is perfect to begin the day, end the day or even for that mid-afternoon boost.    I found that this book helped me explore, reflect and expand on my knowledge of Genesis and the story of Jacob.  I know I will be returning to this book over and over again.  I think it is a book that will reveal something new to learn with each new reading.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a great individual Bible study or devotional.  Whether you are new to your faith or have been on the walk with God for many years, there is something in this for everyone.

The author continues to amaze me with Bible scripture and accuracy. He really knows his Bible -which is portrayed in his commentaries. Dr. Andrew C. S. Koh has become one of my favorite authors, Tiffany Townsend, Goodreads, 5/5

The best thing about the book is its accuracy. The book is based on scripture alone. Throughout the book, the author does NOT give opinions. If you are curious about Jacob and want to read it accurately-read this book, Tiffany Townsend, Amazon, 5/5

This is a good book to take you on Jacob’s journey during your daily life. Jacob’s story is such an interesting tale and Dr.Andrew C. S. Koh brings it to life in a modern world for the reader to enjoy and understand, Rowan E Creech, Goodreads, 5/5

This book of daily devotionals is very detailed, and as usual, Dr Koh is does a great job of explaining the verses in an open and in-depth manner. I find some of the verses to be rather different than those of my Catholic version of the Bible, but I find that enriching and interesting. I have really enjoyed this look through Genesis amd am interested in seeing how Joseph’s story is captured by Dr Koh. The prayers following each Chapter are lovely and make for a nice evening or morning, depending on when I can settle in to read for the day! Highly recommended!, Fluffy Luggage, Amazon, 5/5
