Introduction
The Hebrew word for Genesis is bereshi, which means beginning. Genesis is the book of beginning, the beginning of the universe, the beginning of creation, the beginning of human beings, the beginning of life, the beginning of sin, etc. There are many first in Genesis, the first human being, the first marriage, the first sin, the first murder, etc. When you read the book of Genesis, watch out for all the first. Genesis can be divided into 2 sections. Genesis chapters 1 to 11 is primeval history, tracing the genealogy from Adam to Abraham. Genesis chapter 12 to 50 is patriarchal history, tracing the genealogy from Abraham to Joseph.
Author, date, recipients
According to tradition, Moses is believed to be the author of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Moses wrote these five books of the Pentateuch for the Israelites during their wilderness wandering.
Outline
Genesis chapters 1-11 can be divided into 4 sections.
Creation- Genesis 1-2
Fall- Genesis 3-5
Flood- Genesis 6-9
Dispersion- Genesis 10-11
Genesis 1
6 Days of Creation
God created the world in six days. Whether this is a literal 24 hours day or not is something that is hotly debated. According to God’s reckoning, 1 day is as 1000 years and 1000 years is as 1 day, 2 Peter 3:8. God created, transcends, and is outside of the time, and space continuum. There are two schools of thought regarding the age of the universe. Is the age billions of years old or is the universe 6000 plus years old? There is also the gap theory. Is there an interval of time between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2? These are hotly debated issues among Bible scholars. As far as the Bible is concerned God is the creator of the universe. In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth. The universe is not a product of a massive explosion billions of years ago. The universe is not a product of random chance and mutations. Human beings did not evolve from monkeys or gorillas
2 Peter 3:8, “But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.”
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to understand Your word. We pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit to enlighten us and to give us wisdom and understanding. Open our hearts, minds, eyes, ears, and spirit to receive, understand, see, apply, honour, and hear the truth of Your word, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Verses 1-4, 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day”, and the darkness he called “night”. There was evening and there was morning, the first day.
Reflection
The Bible begins with “in the beginning God created”. We do not know when this beginning was. Is it billions of years or thousands of years? God created the universe in eternity past. The universe did not evolve by random chance over billions of years. It takes a lot more faith to believe in evolution than creation. God has no beginning. He is outside the time-space continuum. He is pre-existent, self-existent, eternal, from everlasting to everlasting, from eternity past to eternity future, from the Alpha, and to the Omega.
The six days of creation have a pre-set template, starting with, “let there be” and ending with, ‘there was evening and there was morning.”
On the first day, God created the heavens, the earth, and the light. According to the Bible, there are three heavens. The atmosphere from the ground to the clouds is the first heaven. The outer space from the clouds to the galaxies is the second heaven. The abode of God’s throne beyond the galaxies is the third heaven. When God created the earth, it was dark, empty, and structureless. The Hebrew word for create is bara, which means to create something out of nothing, or ex-nihilo in latin.
God separated the light and the darkness, calling the darkness, evening, and the light, morning, and this was the first day. God defined a day as one evening and one morning. A Jewish day starts from 6 pm in the evening until 6 pm the next evening.
The Holy Spirit circled around the formless, structureless, dark, empty, and watery earth. God spoke, let there be light and light appeared on site. This was not the light of the sun but the light of God’s glory, Revelation 21:23. Jesus Christ is the word of God’s word, John 1:1.
The Trinitarian God of the Bible, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit created the universe. God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness and called them day and night. The Hebrew word for God is Elohim, a plural noun.
In the presence of the Holy Spirit, God, the Father spoke the WORD, and it came to be. Jesus Christ is the spoken Word of God, the father.
Revelation 21:23, “The city has no need for the sun, neither of the moons, to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb.”
John 1:1, “in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.”
Verses 6-8, 6 God said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. 8 God called the expanse “sky”. There was evening and there was morning, a second day.
On the second day, God separated the watery universe into two compartments, one on top and one on the bottom, in between the sky or atmosphere. The compartment of water above the sky protected the earth below.
Verses 9-13, 9 God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;” and it was so. 10 God called the dry land “earth”, and the gathering together of the waters he called “seas”. God saw that it was good. 11 God said, “Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seeds, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with their seeds in it, on the earth;” and it was so. 12 The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with their seeds in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
Reflection
On the third day, God separated the land and the water below the atmosphere to form the earth and the oceans. God created the trees, the plants, the herbs, and the grass, and saw that they were good.
Verses 14-19, 14 God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs to mark seasons, days, and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
Reflection
On the fourth day, God created seasons, days, weeks, months, years, sun, moon, stars, and galaxies. The sunlight shines in the day. The reflected light from the moon and stars shines in the night. On day 1, God provided light with His glory. On day 4, God created the sun to reflect its light to the moon, and the stars.
Verses 20-25, 20 God said, “Let the waters abound with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21 God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. 24 God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so. 25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.
Reflection
On the fifth day, God created all the sea creatures, the land animals, the insects, the creeping things, and the birds. God saw that they were good, blessed, and summoned them to be fruitful and multiply.
Verses 26-31, 26 God said, “Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them. God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 God said, “Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food. 30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food;” and it was so. 31 God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
Reflection
On the sixth day, God created men and women in His own image. He commanded men to have dominion over the sea creatures, the land animals, the birds, the livestock, and the creeping things. He commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. God commanded them to eat the fruits, the herbs, the seeds, and the plants. God also allowed the land animals, birds, and sea creatures to eat fruits, herbs, seeds, and plants. God commanded humans, animals, birds, and sea creatures to be herbivores and not carnivores. On days 1 to 5, God declared His creation as good but only on day 6, did He declare His creation as very good. On day 6, God created, human being, the crowning glory of His creation in His own image.
Genesis 1:28-30 is the Adamic or Edenic covenant, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth……..”
God created human beings in His own image, to have dominion over the animals, birds, sea creatures, and all living things. Human beings will reproduce, multiply, and populate the earth. Human beings, animals, birds, and sea creatures will be vegetarian.
Just as the Trinity was at work during creation, the Trinity was also at work during our conversion. Before we become Christians, our lives were dark, formless, empty, and purposeless. When someone shared the Gospel to us, Jesus, the word of God spoke into our hearts, and the Holy Spirit convicted us of sin. The light of Jesus shines into our hearts and illuminate our hearts with His glorious light. We confessed, believed, and surrendered our lives to Jesus. We came into the light and our lives became meaningful and purposeful. See 2 Corinthians 4:6.
2 Corinthians 4:6, seeing it is God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Application
It is important to acknowledge and trust in God’s sovereignty and power. His divine design reveals His lordship over all things, bringing peace to chaotic and uncertain situations.
Accept and embrace God’s order and purpose in the creation. Every day, God’s intentionality is revealed by the progression from chaos to order. To live a purposeful life and follow His will in daily routines while maintaining order.
All interactions should begin by acknowledging the inherent dignity and worth of every human being. Genesis 1:26-27 says that humans were made in God’s likeness. It is important to remember that we are all created in God’s image.
Take on the responsibility of caring for your environment. God gave humans dominion of the Earth (Genesis 12:30-30), which implies that stewardship is more important than exploitation. By practicing sustainable methods and advocating environmental preservation, you can play your part.
Your weekly schedule should include rest and spiritual renewal. Rest, worship, and reflection are important for renewing both your body and spirit. According to Genesis 2:1-3, even God rested after six days of creating the universe.
Accept creativity and diligence as you work. God wants us to be creative, whether it’s in art, science, business, or everyday tasks. Consider each task an act of worship.
Celebrate and honor God’s goodness. God repeatedly praised His creation (Genesis 1, 14, 10, 12, 18, 21, and 25). This can inspire us with its beauty and goodness, and to feel grateful.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us the light of Christ to illuminate, recreate, teach, convict, correct, and conform us to Your image. Thank You for saving us and regenerating our spiritual lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 2
6th day of Creation
Whereas Genesis chapter 1 is the overall account of the first one week of creation, Genesis chapter 2 zoomed in specifically on the sixth day of creation.
Verses 1-3, 1 The heavens, the earth, and all their vast array were finished. 2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had done; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. 3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because he rested in it from all his work of creation which he had done.
Reflection
Hebrews for God is Elohim, a plural noun. On the seventh day, God took a rest from His work. He blessed the seventh day and made it holy. Hebrews for holy is qadesh, which means sanctified, set apart, or separated. This is a special day of the Lord.
Verses 4-6, 4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens. 5 No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground, 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
Reflection
The phrase, ‘history of the generations’ is used for the first time and will be repeated many times in Genesis. Hebrews for Yahweh God is Yahweh Elohim or the LORD God. There were no plants and herbs. The LORD God had not sent in the rain. Instead, He sent a mist from the ground to water the earth. God had not created man. Genesis chapter 2 retold the creation of human beings in greater detail than Genesis 1.
Verses 7-8, 7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
Reflection
The Lord God created Adam from the dust of the earth, breathed into his nostrils, and gave him life. The LORD God planted the garden of Eden and placed Adam there to cultivate it.
Verses 9-14, 9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted and became the source of four rivers. 11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and onyx stone are also there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel. This is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
Reflection
The LORD God created all the trees, including the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, in the middle of the garden. A river flowed out from the garden of Eden. This river branched into four tributaries called Pishon, Gihon, Hiddekel, and Euphrates. Just as a river flowed out from the garden of Eden, a river also flowed out from the New Jerusalem, Revelation 22:1-2.
Revelation 22:1-2, “He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
Verses 15-16, 15 Yahweh God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it. 16 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
Reflection
The LORD God placed Adam, into the garden of Eden and commanded him to cultivate it. God only gave Adam one prohibition. He can eat from all the trees in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The result of breaking this commandment is death. God gave Adam the free choice to obey or disobey Him. The wage of sin is death, Romans 6: 23 a.
Romans 3:23 a, “the wages of sin is death”.
Verses 18-20, 18 Yahweh God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature became its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for man, there was not found a helper comparable to him.
Reflection
Seeing that Adam was alone, LORD God created Eve to help him and be his companion. God created all the animals of the earth and the birds of the air and allowed Adam to name them one by one. Adam gave names to all the animals and birds but he had no helper to assist him.
Verses 21-25, 21 Yahweh God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. As the man slept, he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Yahweh God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man and brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they were not ashamed.
The LORD God put Adam into a deep sleep, took one of his ribs, and closed the skin. LORD God created Eve from Adam’s ribs and brought her to him. Adam named Eve woman because she was taken out of man. The LORD God solemnised the first marriage of Adam and Eve. A man would leave his father and mother and be united to his wife in marriage. Adam and Eve were both naked, but they were not ashamed. There are many first in Genesis. Here is the first marriage. When you study Genesis make a note of all the first.
Application
By acknowledging and respecting the unique origins of humanity, we can honor and recognize it as such. God breathed life into Adam when he created him from dirt (Genesis 2:17). This symbolized the uniqueness of humanity among all living things, and highlighted its inherent dignity and worth. We should therefore treat everyone with dignity and respect.
Work is a privilege and a duty. God had Adam work and took care of Eden before he was expelled (Genesis 2:15). Work is about fulfilling your purpose and protecting the things that you have been given by God.
We are stewards of our environment. God assigned Adam the responsibility of caring for and protecting the Garden, symbolizing mankind’s role to nurture and protect creation. We should adopt sustainable practices for our own benefit and for the environment. It’s our responsibility as global citizens.
Respect and maintain the sacredness of marriage. Genesis 2:18-24 explains that Eve was formed from Adam’s rib, creating the basis for marriage as a union between man and woman to form a supportive and enduring partnership.
Cultivate harmonious relations. God chose Eve as Adam’s perfect partner to show that men and women should work together. Recognizing and respecting each other’s strengths and differences is essential for harmonious relationships.
Make regular rest and renewal your number one priority. Genesis 2:2-3 reaffirms the concept of Sabbath Rest, which God himself demonstrated by resting on the seventh day. Regular times of reflection, worship, and rest are essential for physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Foster an intimate, personal relationship with God. Genesis 2 shows a close and personal relationship between God and Adam. Through prayer, worship and study of His Word, you can develop a deep personal connection with Him.
The first verse of the Bible declared that in the beginning, God created heavens and the earth. The universe including human beings is created by God. Evolution is a lie. It takes more faith to believe in evolution than in creation. How can everything come to life through random chance? How can man evolve from monkeys? If you can believe that God created heavens and earth, you will have no difficulty believing all the miracles recorded in the bible.
God instituted the seventh day of the week as the day Sabbath. Since God rested on the Sabbath, we should also rest on the Sabbath. The Sabbath day is holy and separated for God. The principle here is to take a rest one day out of every seven days. This is a principle to apply, not a legalistic duty to enforce. God created the Sabbath for men but the Pharisees became so legalistic over the law of Sabbath-keeping to the extent of causing a burden to the people.
The wage of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ, Romans 6:23 and 5:17.
Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 5:17, “For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ”.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that You are the God of creation, the God of salvation, the God of redemption, and the God of reconciliation. You are wonderful, counsellor, Prince of Peace, everlasting Father, and mighty God. Thank You that Christ is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last, the author and perfecter of our faith, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 3
The Fall
This chapter records the first sin of human beings. Satan appeared on the scene disguised as a talking serpent to tempt and deceive Eve and succeeded. Everything went downhill for humanity and the whole of creation from this point onwards.
Verses 1-3, 1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees of the garden, 3 but not the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it. You shall not touch it, lest you die.’”
The serpent, satan was the most cunning, conniving, and deceitful of all the creatures. The serpent, dragon, or satan is the father of lies and deception. Satan appeared to Eve in the form of a talking serpent. Satan questioned the honesty of God. Satan planted doubt in the mind of Eve by saying, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” Eve was deceived because she did not know the word of God. She wrongly alleged that God prohibited her from touching the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The actual command from God was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Genesis 2: 17.
Genesis 2:17, “but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.”
Verses 4-6, 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You won’t really die, 5 for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate. Then she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too.
Satan questioned the integrity of God. Satan deceived Eve by saying that God was hiding something good from her. Satan continued to sow the seeds of doubt into Eve and even accused God of hiding the knowledge of good and evil good from her.
Eve succumbed to the lust of the flesh, the fruit was good to eat. She succumbed to the lust of the eyes, the fruit was good to look at. She succumbed to the pride of life, it was good for wisdom. Satan also tempted Jesus along the same lines but Jesus overcame satan by the word of God.
Eve ate the fruit and gave it to Adam and he also ate it! Eve was tempted by satan but Adam was not deceived by satan. Adam willingly ate the forbidden fruit even though he knew the consequence of doing so.
Verses 7-9, 7 Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 They heard Yahweh God’s voice walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. 9 Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 The man said, “I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so, I hid myself.”
Their eyes were opened, they saw their nakedness, and felt shameful. Before the fall, Adam and Eve were naked but they did not feel ashamed because their hearts were pure. After the fall, they saw their nakedness through sinful eyes because their hearts were sinful. They sewed fig leaves to cover up their sin. The Lord God came to the garden, but they hide from Him. The Lord God called Adam and summoned him to come out. Adam and Eve tried to cover their sins with their own self-effort, but this was not adequate. Only God could cover their sins adequately.
Verses 11-14, 11 God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.13 Yahweh God said to the woman, “What have you done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 Yahweh God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this you are cursed above all livestock and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
Adam and Eve played the blame game instead of admitting, confessing, and taking responsibility for their actions. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed satan. The LORD God pronounced a curse on satan for his conniving, lying, dastardly, and wicked act.
Verses 15-16, 15 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel.” 16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. You will bear children in pain. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
The LORD God pronounced enmity between Eve and satan, and between her offsprings and satan’s offsprings. The seed of Eve is Jesus Christ. The LORD will send Jesus Christ to bruise satan’s head and satan will bruise Jesus’ heal on Good Friday. Women will suffer the pain of childbirth and be subjected to their husbands.
Verses 17-19, 17 To Adam he said, “Because you have listened to your wife’s voice, and have eaten from the tree, about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ the ground is cursed for your sake. You will eat from it with much labor all the days of your life. 18 It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field. 19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your face until you return to the ground, for you were taken out of it. For you are dust, and you shall return to dust.”
Even Adam was not spared. Adam will have to work the ground with his hands through sweat and tears. Even the ground was not spared. God cursed the ground so that thorns and thistles would grow. Human beings will return to dust at death since human beings were created out of dust.
Genesis 3:15-19 spelled out the consequences of the fall viz. enmity between Eve and satan, marital strife, painful childbirth, the ground was cursed, hard labour for men, physical and spiritual death.
Verses 20-24, 20 The man called his wife Eve because she would be the mother of all the living. 21 Yahweh God made garments of animal skins for Adam and for his wife and clothed them. 22 Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever—” 23 Therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
Adam called his wife Eve because she was the mother of the living. Hebrews for Eve is Hava, which means source of the living. The LORD God made garments from animal skin to cover the sin of Adam and Eve. God had to kill animals and shed their blood to get the skins. The atonement of sin required the shedding of blood, Hebrews 9:22. This was the first sacrifice. This was a foreshadow of Christ, the Lamb of God, who will be the substitutionary atonement for the sins of mankind.
God expelled Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden to their deny access to the tree of life. The access into the garden of Eden was forever closed to Adam and Eve. God placed cherubim with a flaming sword to guard the entrance to the garden of Eden.
Hebrews 9:22, “According to the law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.”
Satan can plant seeds of doubt in your hearts if you do not know the word of God accurately. Eve was deceived because she did not know the word of God accurately. Know the word accurately. Do not be deceived by speakers who quote scriptures wrongly and out of context. Countercheck whatever you hear from any speaker with the Bible, see Acts 17:11.
Do not succumb to the lust of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life, 1 John 2:15-17.
Jesus covered our sin with His robe of righteousness, imputing His righteousness to us when we believe in Him.
Acts 17:11, “Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”
1 John 2: 15-17, “Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.”
Application
Avoiding temptation begins with acknowledging its presence. Satan reminded Eve of this in Genesis 3:5 when she fell prey to his deceptive lure. To resist these seductions, you must be aware of your vulnerability and draw strength from God.
Remember that disobedience has severe consequences. Adam and Eve’s choice to eat from a forbidden fruit tree led to shame, guilt and separation from Him. (Genesis 3:16, 23-24). This is a warning to obey Him and consider the long-term effects of your actions.
Accept responsibility for your actions. Adam and Eve tried to blame God when they were confronted (Genesis 3:11-13). Instead of offering excuses, accept responsibility for your actions and seek forgiveness from them.
You need to trust God’s mercy and justice. God punished Adam, Eve, and the serpent, but also gave them clothes and promised a Savior (Genesis 3:14-19, 3:121-3:15). It is because of this duality that we must put our faith in both the justice and grace aspects of God’s righteous judgment.
You should be aware of the damage that sin can cause to relationships. Adam and Eve’s sin led to great turmoil in their marriage, as well as suffering among all parties (Genesis 3:16-19). Acknowledge the impact of broken relationships and forgive anyone who has hurt you or someone you love.
Recognize that you need a Savior. Genesis 3:15 promises that Jesus will defeat the serpent, emphasizing the need for redemption and urging us to trust in Christ for our salvation and restoration.
Deal with feelings of guilt and shame effectively. Adam and Eve’s reaction in Genesis 3 is a good example of how to deal with feelings of shame and guilt.
You still have to live with the consequences of past sins, even if you are forgiven. This truth is illustrated by Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:16-19. To live a successful and happy life, make responsible choices in accordance with God’s plan.
Trust in God, even in the midst of challenging situations. Even though Adam and Eve had disobeyed God (Genesis 3:11), He provided clothing for both of them. This is a great example of how we can trust in God’s care and provision when dealing with the results of our mistakes.
Protect your mind and heart against deception. Eve was led to doubt God’s Word by the serpent (Genesis 3:6-6) so stay close to Him and avoid influences that will lead you astray.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for justification and salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Thank You for covering our sin by the imputed righteousness of Christ. Thank You for salvation through the finished work of Christ on the cross. Help us not to succumb to the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life, in Jesus’ name,
Genesis 4
1st Murder
After the fall of Adam and Eve, sin and death entered humanity. In this chapter we have the first death, and the first murder. Cain killed his brother Abel in cold blood due to jealousy and anger.
Verses 1-5, 1 The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with Yahweh’s help.” 2 Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 As time passed, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground. 4 Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. Yahweh respected Abel and his offering, 5 but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
Reflection
Eve gave birth to a son and called him Cain. She gave birth to another son and called him Abel. Abel was a sheep keeper while Cain was a farmer. Yahweh rejected Cain’s offering of fruits, but He accepted Abel’s offering of an animal. Cain was angry with God for rejecting his offerings.
Cain’s attitude in his offering was not pleasing to God. He did not offer with faith and he did not offer his best to God. Abel’s attitude in the offering was pleasing to God. He offered with faith and sacrificed an animal without any blemish or defect. Cain’s offering of his crops did not involve the shedding of blood. Abel’s animal offering involved killing and shedding its blood. The author of Hebrews says that there is no remission of sin without the shedding of blood, Hebrews 9:22.
Hebrews 9:22, “According to the law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.”
Verses 6-8, 6 Yahweh said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen? 7 If you do well, won’t it be lifted up? If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.” 8 Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.” While they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
Reflection
The LORD asked Cain why he was angry, told him to re-examine himself, and repent of his sin. God would not reject his offering if he offered his best, with faith, and correct attitude. God warned Cain that harbouring anger in his heart would result in undesirable consequences. Cain called Abel to the field and murdered him in cold blood. This was the first murder.
Verses 9-12, 9 Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?” He said, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 Yahweh said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground. 11 Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 From now on, when you till the ground, it won’t yield its strength to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.”
Reflection
The LORD asked Cain for Abel’s whereabouts, but he lied and said he did not know. This was the first lie. The LORD told Cain that Abel’s innocent blood was crying out for vengeance from the ground. The LORD cursed Cain and made him a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.
Verses 13-15, 13 Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. Whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.” Yahweh appointed a sign for Cain so that anyone finding him would not strike him.
Reflection
Although Cain did not repent of his sin, he pleaded for mercy. Now that Cain was a fugitive, the avenger of blood would come and kill him. The LORD gave grace and mercy to Cain. He issued a decree forbidding anyone from killing Cain. The LORD put a mark on Cain to protect him from the avenger of blood. Even though Cain committed a capital crime, God gave him mercy and grace and spared his life.
Verses 16-19, 16 Cain left Yahweh’s presence, and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17 Cain knew his wife. She conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city and named the city after the name of his son, Enoch. 18 Irad was born to Enoch. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech. 19 Lamech took two wives: the name of the first one was Adah, and the name of the second one was Zillah.
Reflection
The LORD banished Cain to the land of Nod, on the east side of the garden of Eden. Cain married a wife and had a son whom he named Enoch. Enoch’s descendants was Irad, Mehulael, Methushael, and Lamech. Lamech married two wives, Adam and Zilah.
Verses 20-24, 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 His brother’s name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe. 22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain’s sister was Naamah. 23 Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me. 24 If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times.”
Reflection
The sons of Lamech were Jabal and Tubal Cain. Lamech was an evil, violent, ruthless, and wicked man. He killed a man for injuring him and a young man for bruising him. He boasted that he was more wicked than his great-great-grandfather Cain.
Verses 25-26, 25 Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to another son, and called him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” 26 A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on Yahweh’s name.
Reflection
Eve conceived again and gave birth to a third son and called him Seth. Seth in Hebrews means appointed or substitute. Seth was a substitute for Abel and would be an ancestor of Jesus Christ. Seth had a son called Enosh. At that time, men started to worship the LORD.
Cain offered a sacrifice that displeased God. Abel offered a sacrifice that pleased God. When we offer to the LORD, we must offer an acceptable sacrifice. God loves a cheerful giver. We must offer our bodies as living sacrifices for God by surrendering our lives to Him and making Him the centre of our lives. We must not allow the world to squeeze us into its mold but allow God to transform and renew us in conformation to his good, perfect, and pleasing will, Romans 12:1-2.
Romans 12:1-2, “Therefore I urge you, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
Application
Approach God with the right attitude and honesty. God did not like Cain’s sacrifice because of its attitude and type in Genesis 4:3-5. Check your standards of worship, intentions, and motives to ensure you are giving your best effort sincerely when worshiping God.
God warned Cain about the dangers of anger and envy in Genesis 4:16-17. It’s important to deal with these feelings before they turn into sin. Instead of allowing negative emotions to fester, resolve them through self-reflection and reconciliation.
Be accountable for your actions and the consequences. Cain refused to acknowledge his brother’s death in Genesis 4:19. Admit your mistakes instead of trying to evade responsibility.
Recognize the seriousness of sin and its far-reaching consequences. Cain received a severe punishment, including a banishment from his home and an economic curse. (Genesis 4:10-12). Accept God’s forgiveness and grace as the necessary remedy for sin.
God is both just and merciful when it comes to sin. God placed a mark on Cain so that other people would not kill him. (Genesis 4:15). You can rely on His fairness and compassion, even though He is just.
Cain’s actions impacted his family and the future generations in a big way (Genesis 4:16-24). Be mindful of your impact on others and form supportive, positive relationships.
Respect human life as sacred. The murder of Abel by Cain (Genesis 4:18) highlights both the value and destructive potential of violence. Promote peace, justice and the protection of all human life.
Follow God’s instructions with faithfulness. God’s refusal of Cain’s sacrifice while accepting Abel’s shows the importance of obedience. (Genesis 4:15) Live according to God’s will in all aspects of your life, hoping that He will be pleased with your efforts.
God desires and provides opportunities for repentance. Cain’s warning (Genesis 4:17) showed that God wanted him to turn away from sin. Take note of God’s warnings, and ask for forgiveness and mercy when you fail to follow His will.
Focus on leaving behind a positive legacy. God’s plan of redemption continued even after Abel had died. Create a legacy in your family of faith and obedience.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, help us to present our bodies to You as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing in Your sight. Help us not to conform to the pattern of his world. Transform and renew our hearts and minds. Help us to discern Your good, perfect, and pleasing will. Help us surrender our lives to You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 5
Genealogy
Genesis 5 traced the genealogy from Adam through Seth all the way to Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Verses 1-5, 1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness. 2 He created them male and female and blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them Adam. 3 Adam lived one hundred thirty years, and became the father of a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he became the father of other sons and daughters. 5 All the days that Adam lived were nine hundred thirty years, then he died.
Reflection
This is the second time, the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4. This is the record of the genealogy from Adam to Noah. God created Adam in His own image. He created Adam and Eve and blessed them. When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son called Seth. Adam died at the age of 930 years. From now on, there would be a series of death. The wage of sin is death, Romans 6:23. Everyone died except Enoch. Everyone died before reaching 1000 years of age. By God’s reckoning, 1000 years is as 1 day and 1 day is as 1000 years. By God’s reckoning of time, everyone died before 1 day.
2 Peter 3:8, “But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.”
Verses 6-8, 6 Seth lived one hundred five years, then became the father of Enosh. 7 Seth lived after he became the father of Enosh eight hundred seven years and became the father of other sons and daughters. 8 All of the days of Seth were nine hundred twelve years, then he died.
Reflection
Seth fathered a son called Enosh at the age of 105. He lived 912 years and died.
Verses 9-11, 9 Enosh lived ninety years and became the father of Kenan. 10 Enosh lived after he became the father of Kenan eight hundred fifteen years and became the father of other sons and daughters. 11 All of the days of Enosh were nine hundred five years, then he died.
Reflection
Enosh fathered a son called Kenan at the age of 90. He died at the age of 105.
Verses 12-14, 12 Kenan lived seventy years, then became the father of Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he became the father of Mahalalel eight hundred forty years and became the father of other sons and daughters 14 and all of the days of Kenan were nine hundred ten years, then he died.
Reflection
Kenan fathered a son called Mahalalel at the age of seventy years. He died at the age of 910.
Verses 15-17, 15 Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, then became the father of Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived after he became the father of Jared eight hundred thirty years and became the father of other sons and daughters. 17 All of the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety-five years, then he died.
Reflection
Mahalalei fathered a son called Jared at the age of 65. He died at the age of 895 years.
Verses 18-20, 18 Jared lived one hundred sixty-two years, then became the father of Enoch. 19 Jared lived after he became the father of Enoch eight hundred years and became the father of other sons and daughters. 20 All of the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty-two years, then he died.
Reflection
Jared fathered a son called Enoch at the age of 162 years. He died at the age of 962.
Verses 21-24, 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, then became the father of Methuselah. 22 After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch walked with God for three hundred years and became the father of more sons and daughters. 23 All the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.
Reflection
Enoch had a son called Methuselah at the age of 65 years. Enoch lived 365 years and was raptured to heaven. He had a close relationship with God. He did not die physically. Enoch was the first person to be raptured to heaven.
Verses 25-27, 25 Methuselah lived one hundred eighty-seven years, then became the father of Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived after he became the father of Lamech seven hundred eighty-two years and became the father of other sons and daughters. 27 All the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty-nine years, then he died.
Reflection
Methuselah fathered a son called Lamech at the age of 187 years. He died at the age go 969. Methuselah was the oldest man to have lived on earth. Hebrews for Methuselah means, ‘his death sends’. God sent the flood immediately after the death of Methuselah.
Verse 28-31, 28 Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years, then became the father of a son. 29 He named him Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, caused by the ground which Yahweh has cursed.” 30 Lamech lived after he became the father of Noah five hundred ninety-five years, and became the father of other sons and daughters. 31 All the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy-seven years, then he died.
Reflection
Lamech fathered a son called Noah at the age of 182 years. Hebrews for Noah means ‘rest.’ Lamech died at the age of 175.
Verse 32, Noah was five hundred years old, then Noah became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Reflection
Noah fathered 3 sons called Shem, Ham, and Japheth at the age of 500 years. There were ten generations from Adam to Noah, Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enosh, Methuselah, Lamech, and Noah.
Are you saved? Have you received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?
The wage of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Sin entered the world through Adam, Romans 5: 12. Through the sin of Adam, all people were made sinners and condemned to death. Through the obedience of Jesus Christ, all people were made righteous and received eternal life, Romans 5:18-19.
Romans 5:12, “Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; so death passed to all men because all sinned.”
Romans 5: 18-19, “So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life. For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.”
Application
Recognize that God’s plan remains constant across generations. His plan for mankind continues unfailingly, despite humanity’s sinful nature and failures. You can trust His plan, both for yourself and the entire world.
Recognize your impact on future generations. The genealogy has shown how your life is part of a larger story. You can leave a legacy of faith, values, and actions for future generations by living your life.
Take stock of your mortality and embrace the life you have with purpose. Genesis 5:8, 11 reminds us that time is short. Make each moment count, by loving God, others and fulfilling God’s goals.
As Enoch, strive to live a life of faithfulness and obedience. Enoch’s example shows the importance of cultivating an intimate, personal relationship marked by obedience and faithfulness with God (Genesis 5.21-24). Faith must be at the heart of any relationship.
Even in times of waiting and hardship, God’s promises can encourage you. Noah is a great example of faithfulness and trust in God’s plan. God knows what is best.
You should value your time and make the most of it. Don’t waste your precious time by not using it for God’s purposes. Use all of your skills, abilities, and resources for His benefit!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for salvation and justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Thank You for sending Your One and Only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to live a perfect life on earth, and to die a cruel death on the Roman cross to pay the penalty of our sin for us. Thank You for sanctification and the gift of eternal life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 6
Noah’s Ark
As the people on earth became more and more wicked. God decided to wipe out the world’s population. God preserved the life of Noah because he was righteous and he walked with God. God drowned every human being on earth except Noah and his wife, three sons, and three daughters-in-law.
Verses 1-4, 1 When men began to multiply on the surface of the ground, and daughters were born to them, 2 God’s sons saw that men’s daughters were beautiful, and they took any that they wanted for themselves as wives. 3 Yahweh said, “My Spirit will not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; so his days will be one hundred twenty years.” 4 The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that when God’s sons came in to men’s daughters and had children with them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
Reflection
This is a difficult passage. As human beings continued to multiply on the earth, they became more and more wicked. Who were the sons of God and the daughters of men? There are two schools of thought. Some scholars believed the sons of God were Cain’s descendants and the daughters of men were Seth’s descendants. Others believed the sons of God were fallen angels (demonic spirits) and daughters of men were women. According to the second school of thought, the sexual union between demonic spirits and women gave rise to a hybrid race of giants or Nephilim. Nephilim in Hebrews means, the fallen ones.
Verses 5-8, 5 Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of man’s heart was continually only evil. 6 Yahweh was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him in his heart. 7 Yahweh said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the surface of the ground—man, along with animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky—for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in Yahweh’s eyes.
Reflection
As time went by, the LORD saw that human beings became too wicked. The LORD decided to wipe out all human beings, all the animals, all the creeping things, and all the birds. But Noah found grace in the LORD’s eyes. God preserved the lives of Noah, his wife, three sons, and three daughters-in-law. Out of all the millions of earth dwellers, only Noah was righteous in the LORD’s eyes.
Verses 9-12, 9 This is the history of the generations of Noah: Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time. Noah walked with God. 10 Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 God saw the earth and saw that it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
Reflection
This is the third time, the word generations or genealogy is used, compare Genesis 2:4, and 5:1. Here is the genealogy from Noah who was blameless, righteous, and walked with God. Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. God saw that the earth was so corrupted, so evil and so full of violence.
Verses 13-15, 13 God said to Noah, “I will bring an end to all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them and the earth. 14 Make a ship of gopher wood. You shall make rooms in the ship and shall seal it inside and outside with pitch. 15 This is how you shall make it. The length of the ship shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
Reflection
God disclosed to Noah His plan to destroy all the people of the earth. He commanded Noah to build an ark from gopher wood. He commanded Noah to waterproof it by applying pitch on the inside and outside. One cubit is 18 inches or 1.5 feet. The ark was massive! Its length was 450 feet, its width was 75 feet, and its height was 45 feet.
The word gopher appears only once in the bible. Until today, the identity of gopher wood remained unknown.
Verses 16-17, 16 You shall make a roof in the ship, and you shall finish it to a cubit upward. You shall set the door of the ship in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third levels. 17 I, even I, will bring the flood of waters on this earth, to destroy all flesh having the breath of life from under the sky. Everything that is in the earth will die.
Reflection
The top of the ark was covered with a roof and had one door, and three levels. The LORD will bring in the flood to drown the world’s population except for Noah, his wife, three sons, and three daughters-in-law.
Verse 18-22, 18 But I will establish my covenant with you. You shall come into the ship, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 Of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ship, to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female.20 Of the birds after their kind, of the livestock after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort will come to you, to keep them alive. 21 Take with you some of all food that is eaten and gather it to yourself; and it will be for food for you, and for them.” 22 Thus Noah did. He did all that God commanded him.
Reflection
The LORD confirmed the Naohic covenant with Noah. He shall spare the lives of Noah, his wife, sons, and his daughters-in-law. God commanded Noah to bring into the ark, one pair of male and female of all the living creatures on earth, and all the birds of the sky to preserve their species. The LORD commanded Noah to bring sufficient food into the ark. Noah did everything according to the LORD’s commandment.
The Noahic covenant also stipulates that God will not send another flood to destroy the world. God sent a rainbow in the sky as a sign of the covenant, Genesis 9: 11-13.
Genesis 9: 11-13, “I will establish my covenant with you: All flesh will not be cut off anymore by the waters of the flood. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it will be a sign of a covenant between me and the earth.”
Application:
Recognize that sin is all around you and in the world. Keep yourself vigilant by checking in regularly, confessing past sins and asking God for forgiveness and healing.
Remember that God is fair and just, and He will judge sin according to His justice. God takes sin very seriously because He holds humans responsible. Follow His standards and warn others of the potential dangers.
Noah’s life is a great example of how to make a powerful statement. Genesis 6:9 says that Noah walked with humility before God. In a world that is becoming increasingly corrupt, it’s important to live a life of integrity, obedience, and faithfulness.
Even when God’s plan is not entirely clear, obey Him. Noah showed his commitment and trust by building the Ark despite a global flood that was unprecedented (Genesis 6.22). Trust in His wisdom, and listen carefully to His guidance.
Be grateful for God’s blessings in your life. Remember how He saved Noah’s family from drowning and escaped judgment (Gensesi6:8). Do not take His grace and protection for granted.
Take advantage of all the opportunities you have to show God’s mercy and justice to others. Follow Noah’s example and show others God’s love and truth by living it out.
Noah built the ark for years before the flood, so be patient with God as he brings His promises to fruition. You can trust that God will keep all of His promises.
Consider the profound impact that one person’s faith can have. Your obedience and your faith can have a far-reaching effect on your family, your community, or even future generations.
Noah built an ark and preached to the people about the coming flood even though no one had ever seen rain or flood! Noah was a man of great faith. He faithfully built the ark and preached God’s message even though everyone was mocking him. He was the only righteous man in the community of violent, wicked, evil, godless, and perverted people.
God gave grace to Noah because he was Godly, righteous, faithful, and walked with God. Are you walking with God?
The ark is a type of Christ. Those who entered the ark were saved from death. Today if anyone is in Christ, he will be saved. To be in Christ is to believe that Christ died for him to pay the penalty of sin. There is no other way to salvation except through Christ. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, John 714:6. Jesus is the door, John 10:9.
John 14:6, Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 10:9,” I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your One and Only Son, Jesus Christ, to earth to be the substitutionary atonement for our sins. Thank You that Jesus Christ is the door, the way, the truth, and the life. Thank You for salvation and justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Genesis 7
The Flood
God commanded Noah and his family members to enter the ark. God made all the male and female animals and birds chosen by Noah, to enter the ark. God closed the ark and sent the rain from the compartment of water above the sky and waters from below the sea to flood the earth.
Verses 1-4, 1 Yahweh said to Noah, “Come with all of your households into the ship, for I have seen your righteousness before me in this generation. 2 You shall take seven pairs of every clean animal with you, the male and his female. Of the animals that are not clean, take two, the male and his female. 3 Also of the birds of the sky, seven and seven, male and female, to keep seed alive on the surface of all the earth. 4 In seven days, I will cause it to rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights. I will destroy every living thing that I have made from the surface of the ground.”
Reflection
God commanded Noah to bring his family members into the ark. He commanded him to take seven pairs of clean animals, two pairs of unclean animals, and seven pairs of birds into the ark to preserve their species. In seven day’s time, God sent the rain to flood the whole world for forty days and forty nights. God destroyed everything that was outside the ark.
Verses 5-12, 5 Noah did everything that Yahweh commanded him. 6 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came on the earth. 7 Noah went into the ship with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, because of the floodwaters. 8 Clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and everything that creeps on the ground 9 went by pairs to Noah into the ship, male and female, as God commanded Noah. 10 After the seven days, the floodwaters came on the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the sky’s windows opened. 12 It rained on the earth forty days and forty nights.
Reflection
Noah obeyed God and did everything accordingly. Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came. Noah went into the ark with his wife, three sons, three daughters-in-law, animals, birds, creeping things, etc. Seven days later, God sent the flood. The fountains under the sea broke opened and flooded the earth from below. The compartment of water above the sky broke open and water poured down from the sky. The great flood took place on the seventh day of the second month when Noah was six hundred years old. The flood lasted forty days and forty nights.
Verses 13-16, 13 In the same day Noah, and Shem, Ham, and Japheth—the sons of Noah—and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered into the ship— 14 they, and every animal after its kind, all the livestock after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 Pairs from all flesh with the breath of life in them went into the ship to Noah. 16 Those who went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God commanded him; then Yahweh shut him in.

According to the LORD’s commandments, the eight family members of Noah, the pairs of animals, live stocks, birds, and creeping things, went inside the ark seven days before the flood came. When the door of the ark closed, those outside the ark perished.
Verses 17-20, 17 The flood was forty days on the earth. The waters increased and lifted up the ship, and it was lifted up above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth; and the ship floated on the surface of the waters. 19 The waters rose very high on the earth. All the high mountains that were under the whole sky were covered. 20 The waters rose fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
Reflection
The flood went on for forty days and forty nights. The ark sailed on the water like a ship. Even the highest mountain peaks were covered under the water by twenty-two and a half feet. One cubit is one and a half feet.
Verses 21-24, 21 All flesh died that moved on the earth, including birds, livestock, animals, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All on the dry land, in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died. 23 Every living thing was destroyed that was on the surface of the ground, including man, livestock, creeping things, and birds of the sky. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ship. 24 The waters flooded the earth one hundred fifty days.
Reflection
All human beings, animals, livestock, creeping things, and birds outside the ark perished. Only eight human beings survived the flood. Today, all the eight billion world inhabitants are descendants of Noah. God gave all human beings a second chance, a new beginning to start over again on a clean slate.
Application
The Flood served as a reminder to sinners of God’s judgement and his ultimate authority. God’s mercy was shown by saving Noah and the family on an ark. God’s character is characterized by justice and mercy.
After the Flood, God made a promise to Noah and all living things that the Earth would never be flooded like that again. This shows His unwavering commitment towards His promises, and His desire to have a relationship with mankind.
The Ark is a powerful symbol for salvation through the faith in God and Jesus Christ. Believers are saved and given eternal life, similar to how Noah and his family were kept safe from harm when they entered the Ark.
Jesus warned about the end times, and stressed that it is important to be prepared and faithful till He returns. God controls everything. Live a life pleasing to Him.
The Flood is a powerful reminder that you are stewards over God’s Creation. Noah had the vital task of protecting animals and preserving biodiversity. Practice responsible stewardship of the planet’s natural resources and environment.
If you are in a flood now, do not despair. Cry out to God and He will rescue you just as he had rescued Noah and his family. God is the God of creation, salvation, redemption, and reconciliation. God is a God of the miracle. With men it is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.
God is a God of a second chance. God will give everyone a second chance to start all over again, with sins forgiven, justified, and declared righteous.
The ark is a type of Christ. If you are in Christ, you are born again into a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5:17.
2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.”
Entering the ark speaks of grace. The dispensation of grace will be over when the ark is closed.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are the true and the living God. Thank You that You are the God of the Bible, the God of creation, salvation, redemption, and reconciliation. We call upon Your name. We build an altar in our lives to worship You. We surrender all our fears, worries, and anxiety to You. We pray that You will rescue us from the flood of our lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 8
A New Beginning
After forty days and forty nights, God stopped the flood, but Noah stayed in the ark until the waters totally subsided. When Noah came out of the ark, he offered burnt offerings to the Lord. Humanity was given a new start with Noah. The human race started all over again with just twelve people. Humanity was given a new lease of life, a second chance to do it right one more time.
Verses 1-5, 1 God remembered Noah, all the animals, and all the livestock that were with him in the ship; and God made a wind to pass over the earth. The waters subsided. 2 The deep’s fountains and the sky’s windows were also stopped, and the rain from the sky was restrained. 3 The waters continually receded from the earth. After the end of one hundred fifty days the waters receded. 4 The ship rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on Ararat’s mountains. 5 The waters receded continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were visible.
Reflection
God remembered Noah and all the living creatures inside it. He sent the wind to blow over the earth and stopped the rain from falling from the sky and waters from gushing out from below the sea. After 150 days, the floodwaters gradually subsided, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeen-day of the seventh month. The tops of the mountains became visible on the first day of the tenth month.
Verses 6-12, 6 At the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the ship which he had made, 7 and he sent out a raven. It went back and forth until the waters were dried up from the earth. 8 He himself sent out a dove to see if the waters were abated from the surface of the ground, 9 but the dove found no place to rest her foot, and she returned into the ship to him, for the waters were on the surface of the whole earth. He put out his hand, and took her, and brought her to him into the ship. 10 He waited yet another seven days; and again, he sent the dove out of the ship.11 The dove came back to him at evening and, behold, in her mouth was a freshly plucked olive leaf. So, Noah knew that the waters were abated from the earth. 12 He waited yet another seven days, and sent out the dove; and she didn’t return to him any more.
Reflection
At the end of forty days, Noah opened the window of the ark and sent out a raven. It went back and forth and returned to the ark. After this, Noah sent out a dove, but it also returned back to the ark. Seven days later, Noah sent out the dove again. This time, it returned with a fresh olive leaf in its mouth. Seven days later, Noah sent out the dove again, and it did not return to the ark. So, Noah knew that the flood water had receded and the ground was dry.
Verses 13-17, 13 In the six hundred first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from the earth. Noah removed the covering of the ship and looked. He saw that the surface of the ground was dry. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ship, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh, including birds, livestock, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply on the earth.”
Reflection
On the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and one years, the flood water receded. On the twenty-seven days of the second month, the surface of the earth was dry. God commanded Noah to bring his wife, his sons, his daughters-in-law, animals, creeping things, and birds out of the ark. God commanded Noah to be fruitful and multiply to replenish the earth’s population.
Reflection
Verses 18-22, 18 Noah went out, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, whatever moves on the earth, after their families, went out of the ship. 20 Noah built an altar to Yahweh, and took of every clean animal, and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 Yahweh smelled the pleasant aroma. Yahweh said in his heart, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake because the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth. I will never again strike every living thing, as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.”
Reflection
Finally, Noah, his family, animals, livestock, creeping things, and birds came out from the ark. Noah built an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings of clean animals and birds to the LORD. The LORD accepted Noah’s offering and promised that He would never curse the ground to strike every living thing in the same way. God promised Noah, times, seasons, days, nights, weeks, months, and years. This was the first time that burnt offering was mentioned in the Bible. Another ‘first’ in the book of Genesis. Noah and his team spent for more than 1 year in the ark.
Application
God was faithful to Noah’s family, despite the severity of the flood. He remained committed to those who stay true to Him despite difficult circumstances.
Wait patiently for God’s timing and provision. Noah waited for the water to go down, showing how to keep going during hard times.
Genesis 8 is a new beginning after the Flood for both humanity and Creation. God can heal after a time of judgement or hardship.
God promised to never again destroy the Earth by flood (Genesis 9, 8-17). God wants a relationship built on mutual trust.
Noah was saved because he obeyed God’s commands. Be faithful and obedient to God in your relationship with Him.
Noah spent years building the Ark, and trusted God’s plan even when others questioned Him. Prepare yourself for God’s call and put your trust in His protection.
God remembered Noah. God remembered you. God never forgets. Even though a mother may forget her breastfeeding baby, God will never forget you, Isaiah 49:15.
Isaiah 49:15, “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!
Noah offered burnt offerings to the Lord. Today, we do not burn animal sacrifices to God because Christ had offered Himself as the perfect sin offering to pay the penalty of our sins for us. We offer our praise, worship, and body as living sacrifices to serve Him.
Only God can stop the flood at His own timing. Similarly, only God can stop whatever crisis at His own timing. God is never early and never late. His timing is perfect.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a new beginning, a new start, a new life, a new spiritual rebirth. Thank you that when we are in Christ, we are born again, born from above, regenerated, and became a new creation. Thank You that the old self of the flesh has gone and the new life in the Spirit has come. Thank You for giving us a second chance to start over, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Genesis 9
The Rainbow Sign
God blessed Noah and his family and commanded them to populate the earth again through childbearing. God sends a rainbow as a sign of His covenant not to send the flood to destroy the earth.
Verse 1-3, 1 God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you will be on every animal of the earth, and on every bird of the sky. Everything that moves along the ground, and all the fish of the sea, are delivered into your hand. 3 Every moving thing that lives will be food for you. As I gave you the green herb, I have given everything to you.
Reflection
God blessed Noah and his sons and commanded them to have lots of descendants to repopulate the earth. Noah and his family will have dominion over the animals, the birds, and the fish. God allowed Noah and his family to eat the animals, the birds, the fish, and plants, i.e. to be carnivorous and herbivorous. Note that before the Flood, God only allowed Adam and Eve to be herbivorous.
Verses 4-7, 4 But flesh with its life, that is, its blood, you shall not eat. 5 I will surely require accounting for your life’s blood. At the hand of every animal, I will require it. At the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man. 6 Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image. 7 Be fruitful and multiply. Increase abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it.”
Reflection
God prohibited Noah and his family from drinking blood because life is in the blood. God imposed capital punishment for murder because a man was made in God’s image. Life is sacred. Human beings are the crowning glory of God’s creation. God reiterated His commandment to Noah and his family to repopulate the earth through childbearing.
Verses 9-12, 8 God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “As for me, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your offspring after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the livestock, and every animal of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ship, even every animal of the earth. 11 I will establish my covenant with you: All flesh will not be cut off any more by the waters of the flood. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:
Reflection
God reiterated His covenant with Noah, his family, and all living creature, that He will never again send the flood to destroy the earth. This is the Noahic covenant.
.
Verses 13-17, 13 I set my rainbow in the cloud, and it will be a sign of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow will be seen in the cloud, 15 I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh, and the waters will no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 The rainbow will be in the cloud. I will look at it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the token of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
Reflection
God placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of the Noahic covenant. Whenever God looked at the rainbow, He will remember His everlasting covenant between Him, human beings, and all living creatures.
Verse 18-23, 18 The sons of Noah who went out from the ship were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham is the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated. 20 Noah began to be a farmer and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and got drunk. He was uncovered within his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it on both their shoulders, went in backwards, and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were backwards, and they didn’t see their father’s nakedness. Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Reflection
Every human being today is a descendant of one of Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. Shem was the forefather of Abraham. Noah was a farmer. One day, Noah was drunk after drinking too much wine. Ham saw his father’s nakedness and told his brothers about him. Shem and Japheth took a blanket, walked backward, and covered their father with the blanket. Shem and Japheth respected their father’s nakedness and protected him from shame. Ham did not respect his father, ridiculed, and publicised his father’s nakedness.
Verse 24-29, 24 Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 He said, “Canaan is cursed. He will be a servant of servants to his brothers.” 26 He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Shem. Let Canaan be his servant. 27 May God enlarge Japheth. Let him dwell in the tents of Shem. Let Canaan be his servant.” 28 Noah lived three hundred fifty years after the flood. 29 All the days of Noah were nine hundred fifty years, and then he died.
Reflection
When Noah awoke and found out what Ham had done to him, he pronounced a curse on one of Ham’s sons Canaan. Noah prophesied that Canaan will be a servant to Shem’s descendants. Noah pronounced a blessing on Shem and Japheth. Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came. So, Noah died at the age of nine hundred and fifty years.
Application
You can trust God’s promises today, just as He did for Noah.
Every individual should be treated equally, regardless of differences between us.
Think about how you interact and promote responsible resource management and use.
Be humble, repent and trust God’s grace for forgiveness.
Extend God’s grace and mercy to others. Seek reconciliation and restoration in your relationships.
Accept and embrace cultural, ethnic and linguistic differences while cultivating understanding and unity between all people.
Noah was drunk with wine and this led to serious consequences. Do not be drunk with wine. The consequences of getting drunk can be very serious. Do not be drunk with wine, instead, be drunk and filled with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 5: 18-19. See Proverbs 23: 20-21 and Romans 13:13.
Ephesians 5: 18-19, “Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing, and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”
Proverbs 23: 20-21, “Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat, for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Romans 13:13, “Let’s walk properly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and lustful acts, and not in strife and jealousy.”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending the rainbow as a sign of Your covenant that You will not send the flood to destroy the earth. Thank You for preserving the life of Noah and his family to replenish the world’s population again. Thank You for giving us a second chance to do it right again. Thank You for saving us by grace through faith in Christ, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 10
Formation of Nations
Genesis 10 traced the genealogy of the three sons of Noah, Shem, Japheth, and Ham, whose descendants gave rise to the different tribes and people groups of the post-flood world, who spoke different languages, and dialects. These people groups are called the table of nations. Genesis 10 listed seventy names and seventy people groups. The entire world population today are descendants of these seventy people groups from the three sons of Noah.
Verses 1-5, 1 Now this is the history of the generations of the sons of Noah and of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth were: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were: Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan were: Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 Of these were the islands of the nations divided in their lands, everyone after his language, after their families, in their nations.
Reflection
This is the fourth time, the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4, 5:1, and 6:9. This passage traced the genealogy of Japheth down two generations. Magog is modern-day Russia. Japheth in Hebrews means to expand.
Japheth’s descendants today are the people of Europe and Asia.
Verse 6-20, 6 The sons of Ham were: Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah were: Sheba and Dedan. 8 Cush became the father of Nimrod. He began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before Yahweh. Therefore, it is said, “like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before Yahweh”. 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 Out of that land he went into Assyria, and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and the great city Calah. 13 Mizraim became the father of Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, Casluhim (which the Philistines descended from), and Caphtorim. 15 Canaan became the father of Sidon (his firstborn), Heth, 16 the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, 17 the Hivites, the Markets, the Sinites, 18 the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad. 19 The border of the Canaanites was from Sidon—as you go toward Gerar—to Gaza—as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim—to Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, according to their languages, in their lands and their nations.
Reflection
This passage traced the genealogy of Ham down three generations. Canaan is modern-day Israel. One of the great-grandsons of Ham was Nimrod, a violent, wicked, ruthless, and cruel religious and political dictator who built Babel, Nineveh, Shinar, and many other cities. Babel is Babylon, modern-day Iraq. Nimrod was a foreshadow of the antichrist. He was the founder of pagan religious practices and astrology in the city of Babel. He was the ringleader who started building the Tower of Babel described in Genesis 11. Just as Babel was prominent in the post-flood world, Babylon will also rise to prominence during the seven-year tribulation of the end time. Babylon will be the headquarter of the antichrist’s one-world government.
Ham in Hebrews means hot. Ham’s descendants today are mainly the Africans.
Verses 21-31, 21 Children were also born to Shem (the elder brother of Japheth), the father of all the children of Eber. 22 The sons of Shem were: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were: Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arpachshad became the father of Shelah. Shelah became the father of Eber. 25 To Eber were born two sons. The name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided. His brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan became the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan. 30 Their dwelling extended from Mesha, as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, by their families, according to their languages, lands, and nations.
Reflection
This passage traced the genealogy of Shem down four generations. The genealogy of Shen is important because he was the ancestor of Abraham and Jesus Christ. Aram is modern-day Syria. Shem in Hebrews means name.
The descendants of Shem today are the Middle Eastern people and the Jews.
Verses 32, 32These are the families of the sons of Noah, by their generations, according to their nations. The nations divided from these in the earth after the flood.
Reflection
This is a summary statement of Genesis 10. This is the fifth time, the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4, 5:1, 6:9, and 10:1.
Application
Trust in God’s sovereignty for yourself and world events. He has an eternal plan encompassing all nations and cultures.
The Table of Nations highlights the many different human cultures and languages that developed as Noah’s descendants spread across the world. Appreciate God’s beautiful creation of diverse peoples and cultures. Embrace diversity and seek unity across cultural divides as all people are made in His image.
Genesis 10 explained the beginnings of different nations and peoples. Studying history helps you see the connections between human civilizations and understand God’s involvement over time. Learn about global issues and cultural contexts.
Genealogies emphasized the significance of family in God’s redemptive plan. Value your family heritage and ancestry as God works through generations to fulfill His purposes. Manage familial relationships well and honor your ancestors with care.
Genesis 10 prophesied God’s plan to bless all nations through Abraham, and ultimately through Jesus Christ.
The variety of nations showed that God wants everyone to worship Him. Participate in His mission of making disciples from all backgrounds (Matthew 28:19).
All of us are descendants of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Although people lived in different countries, spoke different languages, practiced different customs and lifestyles, they belonged to one race, the human race. All people shared the same ancestries, blood types, and DNAs although in different combinations and compositions. There is therefore, no place for racism and discrimination.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for all that You have done for us in our lives. Thank You for salvation and justification by grace through faith in Christ. Thank You for sanctification through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for the gift and promise of eternal life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
Genesis 11
Dispersion of Nations
Genesis 11 traced the genealogy from Shem to Abraham. Human beings became proud, arrogant, and self-reliant. Under the leadership of Nimrod, they started to build a tall skyscraper in Shinar called the Tower of Babel. Nimrod in Hebrews means to rebel. The tower was to be a pagan religious, astrological centre that will reach into heaven.
Instead of worshiping the Creator God, they worshiped the sun, the moon, and the stars. God confused their language and dispersed them all over the world. Babel in Hebrews means confusion. Shinar is ancient Mesopotamia or modern-day Babylon. At the end of world history, during the seven-year tribulation, Babylon may become the political and religious headquarter of the one-world government under the antichrist.
Verses 1-4, 1 The whole earth was of one language and of one speech. 2 As they traveled east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there. 3 They said to one another, “Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. 4 They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”
Reflection
The people of the post-flood world spoke only one language and one dialect. The people traveled east and settled in Shinar. They became arrogant, ambitious, and proceeded to construct a skyscraper in Shinar called the Tower of Babel. This tower will rise high up in the sky towards heaven. They wanted to build a name, city, and tower by and for themselves so as to be independent of God.
Verses 5-7, 5 Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. 6 Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. 7 Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
Reflection
The Trinitarian LORD came down from heaven to see their construction. Seeing their pride, arrogant, self-dependence, defiance, and rebellious attitudes, God confused their language so that different people group spoke a different language. The people could not communicate with each other and had to discontinue building the tower.
Verses 8-9, 8 So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth. From there, Yahweh scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.
Reflection
The LORD dispersed the people to different parts of the earth according to their family clans, language, and people group. The people migrated out from Shinar to settle in other countries. The people of different countries spoke different languages, adopted different cultures, lifestyles, and customs.
Verses 10-11, 10 This is the history of the generations of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old when he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood. 11 Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad and became the father of more sons and daughters.
Reflection
This is the sixth time the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4, 5:1, 6:9, 10:1, and 10:32. Shem was one hundred and ten years of age when he fathered Arpachshad, two years after the flood. Shem lived another five hundred years and died at the age of six hundred years.
Verses 12-15, 12 Arpachshad lived thirty-five years and became the father of Shelah. 13 Arpachshad lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Shelah and became the father of more sons and daughters. 14 Shelah lived thirty years and became the father of Eber. 15 Shelah lived four hundred three years after he became the father of Eber, and became the father of more sons and daughters.
Reflection
Arpachshad was the father of Shelah, and he died at the age of 438 years. Shelah was the father of Eber, and he died at the age of 435 years.
Verses 16-19, 16 Eber lived thirty-four years and became the father of Peleg. 17 Eber lived four hundred thirty years after he became the father of Peleg and became the father of more sons and daughters. 18 Peleg lived thirty years and became the father of Reu. 19 Peleg lived two hundred nine years after he became the father of Reu and became the father of more sons and daughters.
Reflection
Eber was the father of Peleg and he died at the age of 239 years. Peleg was the father of Reu, and he died at the age of 238 years.
Verses 20-32, 20 Reu lived thirty-two years and became the father of Serug. 21 Reu lived two hundred seven years after he became the father of Serug and became the father of more sons and daughters. 22 Serug lived thirty years and became the father of Nahor. 23 Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor and became the father of more sons and daughters. 24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years and became the father of Terah. 25 Nahor lived one hundred nineteen years after he became the father of Terah and became the father of more sons and daughters. 26 Terah lived seventy years and became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Reu was the father of Serug and he died at the age of 239 years. Serug was the father of Nahor and he lived 230 years. Nahor was the father of Terah and he lived 238 years. Terah was the father of Abram, whom God renamed Abraham. 27 Now this is the history of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran became the father of Lot. 28 Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees, while his father Terah was still alive. 29 Abram and Nahor married wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was also the father of Iscah. 30 Sarai was barren. She had no child. 31 Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife. They went from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan. They came to Haran and lived there. 32 The days of Terah were two hundred five years. Terah died in Haran.
Reflection
This is the seventh time the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4, 5:1, 6:9, 10:1, 10:32, and 11:10. The genealogy of Terah was listed. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Terah died at the age of 205 years. Haran was the father of Lot. Abram married Sarai but Sarai was barren.
Later, God renamed Sarai to Sarah. Terah took Abram, Lot, and Sarai and went from Ur of the Chaldees to Canaan but he settled in Haran and did not make it to Canaan. Terah died at the age of two hundred and five years. The life span of the people post-flood became shorter and shorter. Noah lived 950 years, Shem lived 600 years, and Terah lived only 205 years. Haran is modern-day Syria.
There were ten generations from Noah to Abraham, viz. Shem, Arpachshad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, Terah, and Abram or Abraham.
Application
Do not be proud and self-dependent. Humble yourself in the presence of God. Do not seek glory for yourself but give glory to God.
The consequences of human arrogance resulted in the breakdown of communication, chaos, and dispersion.
God’s is ultimately in control over human affairs. Trust in God’s providence and submit to His plans even when they differ from your own ambitions.
Appreciate the beauty of cultural diversity. Appreciate and learn from different cultures, promoting mutual respect and understanding.
The people wanted to build a name, a city, and a tower for themselves by their own self-effort, independent of God. This was a rebellion towards God. They wanted to worship the sun, the moon, and the stars instead of God. The saying, ‘man proposes but God disposes,’ is so true. God confused their language and dispersed them from Shinar.
Are you building a name for yourself or are you trusting God to build a name for you? Humble yourself to God and He will raise you up. Do not be self-dependent but be God-dependent.
