Bible Study: Genesis 5

Chapter 5, Genesis 5: 1-32, Genealogy from Adam to Noah

Genesis Chapter 5 traced the genealogy from Adam through Seth all the way to Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Verses 1-5, 1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, he made him in God’s likeness. 2 He created them male and female, and blessed them. On the day they were created, he named them Adam. 3 Adam lived one hundred thirty years, and became the father of a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he became the father of Seth were eight hundred years, and he became the father of other sons and daughters. 5 All the days that Adam lived were nine hundred thirty years, then he died.

This is the second time, the word generations or genealogy was used, compare Genesis 2:4. This is the record of the genealogy from Adam to Noah. God created Adam in His own image. He created Adam and Eve and blessed them. When Adam was 130 years old, he had a son called Seth. Adam died at the age of 930 years. From now on, there would be a series of death. The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23. Everyone died except Enoch. Everyone died before reaching 1000 years of age. By God’s reckoning, 1000 years is as 1 day and 1 day is as 1000 years. By God’s reckoning, everyone died before 1 day.

2 Peter 3:8, “But don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.”

Verses 12-14, 12 Kenan lived seventy years, then became the father of Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived after he became the father of Mahalalel eight hundred forty years, and became the father of other sons and daughters 14 and all of the days of Kenan were nine hundred ten years, then he died.

Kenan fathered a son called Mahalalel at the age of seventy years. He died at the age of 910.

Verses 21-24, 21 Enoch lived sixty-five years, then became the father of Methuselah. 22 After Methuselah’s birth, Enoch walked with God for three hundred years and became the father of more sons and daughters. 23 All the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him.

Enoch had a son called Methuselah at the age of 65 years. Enoch lived 365 years and was raptured to heaven. He had a close relationship with God. He did not die physically. Enoch was the first person to be raptured to heaven.

Methuselah fathered a son called Lamech at the age of 187 years. He died at the age go 969. Methuselah was the oldest man to have lived on earth. Hebrews for Methuselah means, “his death sends”. God sent the flood immediately after the death of Methuselah.

Verse 28-31, 28 Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years, then became the father of a son. 29 He named him Noah, saying, “This one will comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, caused by the ground which Yahweh has cursed.” 30 Lamech lived after he became the father of Noah five hundred ninety-five years, and became the father of other sons and daughters. 31 All the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy-seven years, then he died.

Application:

Are you saved? Have you received Jesus as your Lord and Saviour?

The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Sin entered the world through Adam, Romans 5: 12. Through the sin of Adam, all people were made sinners and condemned to death. Through the obedience of Jesus Christ, all people were made righteous and received eternal life, Romans 5:18-19.

Romans 5:12, “Therefore as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; so death passed to all men because all sinned.”

Romans 5: 18-19, “So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life. For as through the one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the one, many will be made righteous.”

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for salvation and justification by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Thank You for sending Your One and Only-begotten Son Jesus Christ to live a perfect life on earth and to die a cruel death on the Roman cross to pay the penalty of our sin for us. Thank You for sanctification and the gift of eternal life, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
