Nostalgic Spider Fights: A Childhood Memory

As a child, spider fights were one of my favorite activities, making my afternoons thrilling and fun. With a sense of adventure, I explored the bushes, carefully searching through the greenery for the best spiders. Male spiders were considered highly prized. They can be identified by their white faces. Female spiders with black faces were of little interest to me.

A large male spider would greatly improve its chances of success in spider fights. This advantage instill a sense of dominance and confidence for its owner. As a result, securing a larger spider is a crucial strategy for success. This highlights the crucial role of the size and strength of spiders in spider-fighting competitions.

When I caught a male spider, I would gently place it inside a matchbox. I included a few leaves to keep it comfortable. The matchbox was more than a simple container. It was a lively space where my beloved spider could explore and play. It served as a temporary home, providing a cozy space for my spider to retreat, weave webs, and feel safe.

Each time I opened it, I was reminded of the fragile balance between nature and captivity. It was a small world in a box. This matchbox held both the excitement of discovery and the comfort of familiarity for my spider and me.

As the moment for the spider fights approached, I would head to the designated meeting spot. A group of children gathered there, each proudly presenting their beloved champions. We unveiled our spiders, one at a time. We placed two of them atop a matchbox. The spiders were poised to face off against each other.

The battle commenced as they collided with their claws, engaging in a fierce struggle for supremacy. Everyone would watch in rapt attention, cheering for their spider. The match would end when one spider disengaged and ran away, leaving the other as the victor.

The competitive battles we faced were fierce, but always filled with laughter and the warmth of shared childhood memories. Reflecting on those days, I see they were about more than just exciting spider fights. They captured the joy of exploration and discovery. Those moments were not about winning or losing. They were more about the friendships formed from simple joys. I was excited to watch my little spider compete in a fight.

During these seemingly ordinary moments, I truly began to appreciate the magic of my childhood. The simplicity of those moments allowed me to revel in the wonder and joy I often took for granted.

Every adventure, no matter how small, created cherished memories of the innocence and imagination of my youth. In retrospect, those fleeting instances of happiness reveal the true magic of youth.

Nostalgic Spider Fights (Poem)

In the quiet corners of a childhood room,
Where dust danced softly in the afternoon gloom,
Tiny warriors, bold and bright,
Clashed in shadows—spider fights.

With legs like spears, they’d fiercely dart,
A dance of fury, a beating heart,
We watched them spar, in silent awe,
These minuscule gladiators, with no law.

Their webs, like banners, fluttered high,
As they spun and swayed, and leaped to fly,
Each move a mystery, a breath held tight,
In the tender thrill of the fading light.

No words were spoken, only grace.
Of their battle, a swift embrace,
We cheered them on, young eyes aglow,
In a world where time seemed to slow.

And now, I stand with grown-up eyes,
Underneath these wide, relentless skies,
But still, I hear the echoes call,
Of spider fights, in a room so small.

The rush of youth, the world so bright,
The silent war in the fading light.
I smile, remembering their fierce grace,
The nostalgia of that quiet space.

A Chilling Nightmare

clinic
AI generated image

Excerpt

The dream painted a chilling picture of a clinic where the narrator encountered daunting obstacles, exacerbated by a severe lack of nursing support. This experience reflected deep fears of inadequacy and highlighted the fragility of healthcare systems. Ultimately, it underscored the importance of compassion, teamwork, and resilience in the medical profession, fostering gratitude for support staff.

An Unsettling Dream

Dreams often serve as a reflection of our innermost fears, desires, and unresolved thoughts. Recently, I experienced a dream that profoundly unsettled me, with its vivid imagery haunting me long after I awoke. In this dream, I found myself in my clinic, a space where countless individuals have been touched, healed, and comforted. Yet, this time, the atmosphere felt distinctly altered—almost sinister—as if an unseen storm was gathering just out of sight.

The Clinic Without Nurses

The scene erupted with a sense of urgency. Twenty patients filled the waiting area, each one wearing a mask of quiet hope. Some anxiously checked their watches, while others sought comfort in the presence of loved ones. Their expectations weighed heavily on me, reminding me of the relief, answers, and healing they were seeking. Yet, there I stood, unprepared for the journey ahead.

That day, only two nurses were on duty, unlike the usual strong team I relied on for smooth clinic operations. Nonetheless, something about this situation felt distinctly unsettling. The first nurse, despite her efficiency, appeared overwhelmingly exhausted, as if she had already endured a double shift. Her movements were noticeably sluggish, and her facial expressions revealed a palpable battle to keep her pace.

In an unexpected moment, she gasped softly. She grasped her arm. This revealed that she had sustained an injury while setting up equipment. Incapable of continuing, she cast me an apologetic look and limped out of the room. As I watched her leave, my heart sank, recognizing how rapidly our fragile support system was crumbling.

Only a single nurse was left. For a fleeting moment, her presence brought me a sense of reassurance. She moved with assurance, tending to the patients and getting the clinic ready for the next cases. But then, without warning, she vanished. I called out her name, searching the room, but there was no reply. It felt like she vanished into thin air. I was left to face the escalating challenges alone.

The waiting room transformed into a turbulent sea, as waves of anxiety crashed over me. Patients grew increasingly restless, their murmurs of frustration reverberating through the clinic. I was dedicated to my patients. But, it was painful to face the reality of being incapable of providing adequate care under these challenging circumstances.

The sense of helplessness was suffocating. I stood there, paralyzed by the weight of responsibility, as if time had stopped. I had honed my skills for years. I had dedicated my life to the art of healing. Yet, at that moment, I felt utterly powerless. Without the necessary support staff, even the most proficient doctor can only achieve so much.

Left with no choice, I realized I had to make a tough call. I spoke to each patient individually, conveying the gravity of the situation.

“I apologize sincerely,” I said, my heart weighed down, “but I won’t be capable of seeing you all today. Please head home, and we will make every effort to reschedule your appointments as soon as possible.”

Some patients responded with understanding, offering comforting words that soothed my frayed nerves.

Nonetheless, others were visibly distressed, their frustration entirely justifiable under the circumstances. I did my utmost to reassure them. But, the weight of disappointment hung heavily in the air. It was like an oppressive fog.

As I watched them leave, an overwhelming sense of failure enveloped me. I had always prided myself on being reliable—a steadfast presence for those in their moments of need. Yet, in this unsettling dream, I felt powerless to help. The clinic was uncharacteristically quiet, a haunting contrast to the usual hustle and bustle of activity.

Just when I thought I could no longer endure the suffocating emptiness, I awoke. The shift from dream to reality was abrupt and disorienting. For a few moments, I lay in bed, my heart racing, my mind replaying the details of the dream. The intensity of the experience had left me unnerved, and I found myself contemplating its deeper meaning.

The dream was more than just a random collection of events. It profoundly mirrored my deepest fears and anxieties. I have experienced times when I grapple with feelings of inadequacy. I have questioned my ability to rise to the challenges before me. As a doctor, I’ve confronted many trials throughout my career. I have played a crucial role in saving lives during high-pressure situations. I have also provided solace to families in their bleakest moments. This dream highlighted the delicate nature of human resilience. It also highlighted the vital role of teamwork in navigating life’s obstacles.

It also highlighted the harsh realities confronted by countless healthcare professionals around the globe. Staff shortages, burnout, and overwhelming patient loads are pressing challenges in the medical field. These issues are far from mere illusions; this dream served as a powerful reminder of their significance. It underscored the vital importance of supporting those who commit their lives to the care of others.

In the days after the dream, I found myself deeply contemplating my journey as a doctor. I reflected on the invaluable lessons it has imparted. It underscored the vital role of compassion—not only toward my patients but also for me and my colleagues. It was a poignant reminder. Even in our moments of vulnerability, I must be resilient. Recognizing my limitations and actively pursuing solutions shows this resiliency.

Dreams have a remarkable ability to unveil the thoughts and emotions we often suppress during our waking lives. Although this particular dream was unsettling, it powerfully illustrated the trials and triumphs inherent in the medical profession. It served as a poignant reminder that I won’t always have control over every circumstance. Ultimately, what truly counts is the commitment to care and the dedication to giving my best.

As I compose this message, my heart swells with gratitude. I am deeply thankful for the dedicated teams of nurses, technicians, and support staff. Their tireless efforts allow doctors to carry out their vital work. These unsung heroes often go unnoticed, yet their contributions are nothing short of invaluable. I am reminded that even in my most challenging times, I am never truly alone. I am part of a greater community. I am united by a shared commitment to serve others.

My resilience truly shapes my identity in the face of adversity. Compassion and adaptability are also central to who I am. Even when challenges are insurmountable, each new day offers me a fresh opportunity to start anew.

Hollywood Tricks: Hulk’s Windshield Smash Explained

the incredible hulk smashing a windshield of a moving car
AI Generated image

Excerpt

The Hulk’s realistic windshield smash relies on clever camera tricks and special effects. He stands on a stationary car. He uses a hammer to break a specially designed windshield. A fast-moving background creates the illusion of speed. Visitors at a Hollywood studio enjoyed filming their own Hulk scenes, showcasing this engaging technique.

The Hulk’s Windshield Smash Explained

Have you ever wondered how they made the Hulk look so realistic? Specifically, when he appears to be smashing the windshield of a speeding car? Turns out, it’s all about some pretty cool camera tricks and special effects. So, here’s the deal: the Hulk is actually standing on a car that’s not really moving at all. Instead of using his fists, he’s got this massive hammer that he’s using to smash the windshield. The thing is, the windshield is made to break easily, so it shatters with the force of the hammer. Meanwhile, the action is recorded in front of a fast-moving background scene. When they put it all together and play it back, boom! It totally looks like the Hulk is wrecking a car zooming down the road. Pretty neat, huh?

Years ago, I learned about this intriguing technique. It was during a memorable visit to the Hollywood studio in Los Angeles. This experience still resonates with me. Volunteers had the chance to film themselves as the Incredible Hulk. They dramatically climbed on a stationary car. Then, they smashed the windshield with the large hammer. The video was skillfully shot, with a fast-moving background scene that created an impressive visual effect. Each volunteer received a free video clip. It featured their own personalized “Hulk action” scene. This was given as a thank you gift for participating. This was what made it so much fun and engaging! It really showed off the amazing skills and tricks that go into making movie magic.

The Spiritual Impact of Faith on Writing

Transforming Faith into Creativity

Creative Writing

Introduction

Faith is more than an influence on my writing. It is the foundation of my creative journey. My writing process is an act of worship. It starts with prayerful beginnings. I overcome challenges and serve readers. I trust God with the outcomes. This process is a reflection of divine inspiration.

Writing transcends mere craft; it is a deeply spiritual journey. Every sentence and story reflects my faith, demonstrating my strong reliance on God as my guide and inspiration. Faith is not merely an influence; it is the bedrock of my entire writing process. In this article, I will delve into the ways faith shapes, directs, and sustains my work as a writer.

Faith as the Wellspring of Creativity

Creativity is a divine gift, a spark that illuminates the soul. As a believer, I perceive my writing as an extension of God’s magnificent creation. In Genesis 1, we witness how God shaped the world through His Word. I find that my words echo this sacred process. Before I start writing, I pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide my thoughts and clarify my ideas.

My faith assures me that my creativity carries a divine purpose. I see my writing as a way to glorify God. Whether it’s Christian books, devotionals, poetry, or memoirs, I aim to uplift others. This conviction influences the themes I embrace, the tone I adopt, and the audiences I strive to engage.

Faith in Overcoming Challenges

The journey of writing is filled with challenges, including self-doubt, creative blocks, and rejection. In these trying times, my faith becomes my steadfast anchor. Scripture reassures me that God’s strength shines brightest in our moments of weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When I feel inadequate or overwhelmed, I let go of my fears. I trust that He will inspire and motivate me to continue.

When I penned my memoir, From Stethoscope to Wisdom: A Doctor’s Reflection, I faced the challenge of vulnerability head-on. Sharing my personal stories felt intimidating, but my faith gave me confidence that my journey can help others. In those moments of uncertainty, I found strength in Philippians 4:13. It says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” With this conviction, I moved onward, trusting that God would wield my words to impact the lives of many.

Faith as a Compass for Truth

As a Christian writer, I am dedicated to being a steward of truth. My faith inspires me to choose my words carefully. It reflects biblical principles. It offers hope, encouragement, and a message of redemption. My Christian books show this dedication. Examples include “Galatians” and “Walking in His Footsteps: A Pilgrim’s Journey Through the Holy Land.”

Writing from a place of faith compels me to be deliberate with my message. I often think about two key questions: Does this align with God’s truth? Will it inspire others to deepen their relationship with Him? These reflections serve as a guiding compass, ensuring that my writing remains both grounded and meaningful.

Faith in the Writing Process

Faith profoundly shapes both the content and the style of my writing. My creative process starts with prayer, inviting God into my artistic space. I seek His wisdom, guidance, and the words necessary to express the message He has instilled in my heart.

There are moments when inspiration surges within me, and I am overwhelmed with gratitude, understanding this as a divine blessing. Yet, there are also times when the creative process unfolds more gradually, demanding both patience and determination. During such instances, I find solace in scriptures. Isaiah 40:31, states, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength.” This verse reassures me that even in times of waiting, God is at work.

Faith profoundly influences my approach to editing and revision. While striving for perfection is tempting, my faith teaches me that my true goal is obedience, not flawlessness. I believe wholeheartedly that God can turn my imperfect efforts into instruments for His perfect will.

Faith in Serving the Reader

Writing is a profound act of service. My faith drives me to consider the needs of my readers, whether they seek comfort, guidance, or inspiration. I often pray for my readers. I ask God to prepare their hearts to embrace the message He has entrusted to me.

This mindset holds significant importance in my role as a Christian author. My aim encompasses much more than just entertainment. I am driven to spark transformative change. I aim to create inspiring words. They encourage readers to think about their faith. My words help deepen their relationship with God. Readers can also find hope in His promises.

Faith in the Outcomes

As a writer, it’s all too easy to fixate on the metrics, book sales, reviews, and accolades. Nonetheless, faith encourages me to surrender the outcomes to God. Proverbs 16:3 states, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” This verse reminds me to focus on my efforts and trust God with the outcomes.

This viewpoint offers a sense of liberation. I do not write for human applause but for an audience of One. Whether my work reaches thousands or only a handful, I trust that God will use it according to His purpose.

Faith in Building Community

While writing can often feel like a solitary effort. My faith bridges me to a vibrant community. Joining groups like Poets, Artists, Writers, and Songwriters (PAWS) has brought me great joy. I connect with fellow creatives who share my values. Together, we uplift one another, exchange ideas, and collaborate on projects that honor God.

My faith inspires me to mentor and uplift others. As a writer, I see my role as a servant-leader focused on helping people discover and use their God-given talents.

Conclusion

Faith serves as the foundation of my writing journey, energizing my creativity and supporting me through challenges. It illuminates my path to truth and empowers me to uplift others. Writing transcends being just a profession or hobby. It is a profound calling, an opportunity to glorify God and spread His love to the world.

Every word I write expresses my devotion and reflects the faith that deeply impacts my life and creativity. I want my writing to inspire and uplift others, bringing them closer to the true Author of our stories.

Life After Cardiology

Rediscovering Purpose and Passion in Retirement

Excerpt

Retirement is not the end of life. It is a new beginning. A retired cardiologist reflects on transitioning from a medical career to a life of rediscovery. Learn how retirement can open doors to new passions, deeper faith, and continued engagement in your field. Embrace this new chapter with purpose and joy.

New Chapter

Retirement signifies a significant transformation in one’s life. I felt uncertain about retiring after many years in cardiology. Leaving patient care, hospital meetings, ward rounds, and medical conferences was both freeing and intimidating. After five years into retirement, I can confidently say that life is full of exciting opportunities. You will find them if you are open to them! Exploring new hobbies, volunteering, and spending time with family have brought me immense joy and fulfillment. Embracing this new chapter has allowed me to rediscover passions that had been overshadowed by my demanding career.

New Found Freedom

For a cardiologist, retirement is not just quitting a job. It is stepping away from a life filled with urgency, responsibility, and learning for over 30 years. My day-to-day life consisted of diagnosing and treating heart conditions. I performed procedures and gave hope for my patients during times of vulnerability. I am now involved in a space that promotes thinking and creativity. This environment allows me to focus on my well-being. I can now pursue interests I had ignored before. This newfound freedom, I believe, is a gift that encourages personal growth and deeper connections with those I hold dear. Each day is an opportunity to cultivate not just my hobbies, but also to nurture relationships that enrich my soul.

Rediscovering Purpose and Passion

One of the greatest joys of retirement has been rediscovering my true identity beyond professional practice. I have engaged in activities that make me truly happy. These activities have allowed me to discover talents I didn’t fully develop while working. This journey of self-discovery has renewed my enthusiasm and helped me connect with the world more meaningfully. With each new venture, I’ve found myself embracing new challenges that push my boundaries and broaden my perspective. My sense of adventure drives me to keep learning and growing, making my days purposeful and exciting.

Maintaining Connections

Even though I no longer practice medicine in its traditional sense, my passion for cardiology still burns bright. I stay updated by attending conferences whenever I can, and keep contact with former colleagues. Through these connections, I gain insights into the latest advancements and trends in the field. This ongoing engagement allows me to merge my medical knowledge with my newfound purpose in writing and sharing wisdom.

Exploring New Interests

One of the unexpected joys of retirement has been exploring interests I never had time for while practicing medicine. I have started writing Christian books, poems and songs, which nourish my spirit and give me a sense of achievement. This experience shows that it is never too late to learn something new. You can express yourself, regardless of your age or life experience! Each book, poem and song becomes a reflection of my journey. They capture the essence of faith and hope that sustains me. Embracing creativity not only enriches my life but also connects me with others who share similar passions and experiences.

Faith and Reflection

Retirement has given me an opportunity to deepen my relationship with God. Now that I’m retired and have more time for reflection, I can better understand how my faith influences my life. Writing devotionals and hosting Christian podcasts has helped me share my faith journey with others to grow spiritually. Retirement has felt like a spiritual rebirth, allowing me to think about how grace has guided my life. Every day offers an opportunity to inspire others and be inspired. It is a time to celebrate the colorful tapestry of life created by faith and creativity.

Takeaway

Retiring does not signal an end; rather it marks a new chapter waiting to be written. Retirement has allowed me to rediscover, contemplate, and renew myself. While I’m no longer practicing medicine, I stay connected to cardiology through pursuits that show my passion. I find fulfillment in sharing my knowledge and experience. This new phase in life has unveiled endless possibilities for growth and connection that I never anticipated.

Are you nearing retirement? Embrace it as a chance to explore, create, and grow instead of fearing it. After retirement, your life can be just as fulfilling by redefining success and exploring new opportunities.

Dream Interpretation

Coping with sudden loss and anxiety

In my dream, I was walking through a bustling city, feeling the energy of the crowd around me. The streets were filled with people. I was enjoying the sights and sounds. I felt a sense of freedom and excitement. I decided to stop at a small café to grab a coffee and rest for a moment. As I reached into my bag to pay, I suddenly realized that my wallet was missing.

Panic surged through me. I frantically searched my bag, patting down every pocket, but it was gone. My heart raced as I tried to remember where I last saw it. I retraced my steps in my mind, thinking back to the crowded market I had walked through earlier. I remembered the jostling crowd, the strangers brushing past me. It must have been then, I thought, when someone took it.

A wave of dread washed over me as I realized the loss wasn’t just the cash. My credit cards, my ID, everything important was in that wallet. I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. I imagined the hassle of canceling my cards and replacing my ID. I also feared someone using my identity. I ran out of the café, frantically looking around. I hoped to catch sight of the thief or find some clue. The crowd was too thick, and everyone seemed like a suspect.

I felt helpless and vulnerable. I knew I was in a strange place with no way to pay for anything. I had no access to money and no identification. I tried to call my bank, my hands shaking as I struggled to remember the number. The operator’s voice was calm, almost robotic, as I explained my situation. I felt overwhelmed by the realization of how much I had lost in just a few moments.

As I hung up the phone, a sense of hopelessness washed over me. I sat down on a nearby bench, feeling defeated. Then, as suddenly as the dream began, I woke up. My heart was pounding, and I quickly checked beside me, relieved to find my wallet safe on the bedside table. It was just a dream. Yet, the feeling of panic and loss lingered with me. It was a stark reminder of how vulnerable we can feel when something so important is suddenly taken away.

Hip Replacement Journey: From Fall to Gratitude

The fall

On July 27th, I fell in my garden and hurt my left leg badly. It was very painful to move after that. Because of the severity of my injury, I couldn’t get up by myself. My son had to delicately help me in getting into the car, employing careful maneuvering.

Diagnosis

My leg felt continued to be very painful until we got to a private hospital’s accident and emergency department. A medical doctor quickly examined me. An X-ray showed that my left femur was fractured at the neck. An orthopedic surgeon was called in right away because it was a serious injury. Based on the X-rays and my condition, the doctor recommended a left hip hemiarthroplasty surgery (hip replacement). He scheduled the surgery as an emergency case.

Surgery

The surgery was successful. I am happy to say that the severe pain I was feeling had improved a lot. It was a huge improvement from how unbearable life was before the operation. Two days after my surgery, I started walking again with a walking frame under the supervision of a physiotherapist. I made good progress in just a few days. I was released from the hospital after only one week to recover at home.

Thank God with a grateful heart

I am very thankful to God for His endless mercy. I am grateful for His constant grace and strong protection through the whole difficult experience. This includes the fall, the surgery, and even during the recovery. I humbly express my deepest appreciation to the Almighty for bestowing upon me such immense blessings.

Forever grateful

I want to thank the surgeon, anesthetist, and the whole medical team for taking care of me. Their unrivaled ability, skill, and dedication have played an integral role in successfully guiding me through this difficult journey.

I am very grateful for the outstanding care from the hospital staff, nursing team, and paramedical staff. They dedicated themselves to doing their best. They worked tirelessly. This has made a huge difference in my recovery. It gave me peace and comfort when I needed it.

I am eternally indebted to all those who have played a part in my healing process. Their compassion and ability continue to touch the lives of many others, as it has undeniably touched mine.

The Year 2022 in review

Dr. Andrew C S Koh

Hey shalom, 2022 is almost over. We are only weeks away from Christmas! This year has been busy and hectic. Apart from Amazon, I have managed to distribute my books to more than 10 bookstores including big names like Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Apple, Kobo, Indigo, Tolino, Vivlio, Scribd, Hoopla, Baker & Taylor and a few more. The books has gone worldwide across the globe for the kingdom of God!

Apart from writing and punishing, I also volunteered my services to the local church for the kingdom of God. This will certainly store up treasures in heaven where moth and rust cannot destroy, and where thieves and robbers cannot break in to steal and rob.

I have now shifted focus from writing commentaries to writing daily devotions. The first daily devotion Manna of Life will be launched in Amazon when I have sufficient reviews.
