A Journey Through History

The journey to the Jordan River transcends mere geography; it is a profound voyage into biblical history. This sacred river flows through the land that God promised to Abraham, his lineage, and the nation of Israel. Joshua led the Israelites from 40 years in the wilderness into their Promised Land (Joshua 3:14-17). The Jordan River appears often throughout the Bible, serving as a powerful symbol of new beginnings and transitions. Notably, it plays a crucial role in the narratives of both Elijah and Elisha. Elijah parted the Jordan’s waters, showcasing the divine power given to him and preparing Elisha to take over his role. This river symbolizes faith, miracles, and the enduring covenant between God and His people.

Christians strongly associate the Jordan River with the pivotal moment of Jesusโ€™ baptism by John the Baptist. This pivotal event highlights His humility and humanity, demonstrating His sinlessness throughout. Today, pilgrims can visit this sacred river to connect with His life and walk in His footsteps. Many think about the importance of baptism and living a life of faith as they wade through the waters. This transforming experience deepens their spiritual journey and sense of community among believers.

A Holy Atmosphere

As I approached the Jordan River, I was enveloped by a profound sense of reverence. The surrounding landscape exuded serenity, with trees softly rustling in the breeze and the river flowing gently alongside. Despite the crowd, the atmosphere was peaceful, reminding me of important events that happened here 2,000 years ago. I felt the weight of history connecting me to those who came before. It was a moment of reflection and gratitude, igniting a renewed commitment to my own spiritual path.

The river before me was often narrow and murky with sediment. As I stood on its banks, peering into its depths, I was struck by a profound spiritual sensation. At that moment, I recalled the powerful words of John the Baptist: “I baptize with water for repentance. But after me comes someone more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:1). The weight of those words resonated within me, reminding me of the transforming power of faith and purpose. It was as if the river, with all its mysteries and challenges, mirrored the journey of the soul seeking enlightenment.

The Baptismal Experience

Visitors to the Jordan River often take the opportunity to renew their baptism vows. Others choose to get baptized in its holy waters. Participants can select beautiful white robes to wear while singing, praying, and celebrating this special event. I observed a spectrum of emotionsโ€”joy, tears, and deep repentanceโ€”on the faces of those entering the water. The sunlight reflected off the river, lifting their spirits and highlighting the importance of this sacred moment. Each participant left with not only water but also renewed hope and a commitment to their spiritual journey.

The experience of baptism was a profoundly transforming moment for me. As I entered the cool water and fully submerged myself, I was reminded of Christโ€™s burial, death, and resurrection. Emerging from the water renewed my faith and highlighted baptism as a powerful symbol of my inner change. In that instant, I felt a deep connection to my beliefs and a sense of clarity about my purpose. It felt like the water washed away my doubts. This allowed a stronger, more vibrant faith to flourish within me.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan: The Traditional Baptism Site

Yardenit, near the Sea of Galilee, is a popular site for baptisms. Nonetheless, according to tradition, Jesus was actually immersed in water at Bethany Beyond The Jordan near the Dead Sea. This area is located on Jordan’s eastern bank, near an ancient baptismal pool and surrounded by natural desert beauty. It feels more authentic because it lacks commercialization. The serenity of the landscape enhances the spiritual experience, allowing visitors to connect deeply with the history of their faith. I felt a deep sense of peace and belonging, as if the spirit of those before me was still here.

Bethany Beyond the Jordan features archaeological remains from the early Christian era, offering visitors a rich historical and reflective experience. Believed to be the site of Jesusโ€™ baptism, it exudes an ambiance of ancient reverence that captivates all who visit. Each step through the site reveals stories etched into the stones, inviting personal reflections on faith and heritage. From Free-Thinker to Faith-Believer

Introduction:

Join me as I revisit a pivotal chapter in my lifeโ€”a journey that took me from being a free-thinking skeptic to a firm believer in faith. Born and raised in the quaint town of Tanjong Malim, Malaysia, my story is one of transformation, resilience, and the undeniable power of God’s grace.

A Carefree Upbringing

Reflecting on my early years, I recount a life free from religious beliefs, despite my parents’ adherence to Taoist practices and ancestral worship. From my primary school days to my upper six grades, I proudly identified as a “free-thinker,” untouched by the concepts of God or faith-based practices.

A Glimpse of Light

The winds of change began to blow when I entered the University of Malaya in 1972. Through the Varsity Christian Fellowship, I was introduced to Christianityโ€”a faith that was foreign to me until then. Bible studies, Christian fellowships, and church retreats paved the way for a newfound understanding of spirituality.

Embracing the Gospel

In the midst of life’s challenges, I encountered the Gospel once again. The message of Jesus as God in human form and His selfless sacrifice resonated deeply within me. With a heartfelt prayer, I made the life-altering decision to accept Jesus as my Savior and Lordโ€”an unwavering commitment that would reshape my life.

A Transformed Life

The transformation that followed was nothing short of miraculous. Christianity brought me an inner peace and purpose I had never experienced before. Gratitude, humility, and contentment became my companions, leading me to focus on God and others. Through the ups and downs, my trust in Jesus grew, guiding me through life’s challenges.

Triumph Over Adversity

In a chilling December of 2019, a life-altering accident left me paralyzed. But through God’s mercy and grace, I defied the odds and fully recovered, confounding expectations. This profound experience solidified my faith in Jesus, igniting a deeper sense of gratitude for His unwavering presence in my life.

Witnesses of His Transformative Power

From a skeptical free-thinker to a faithful believer, my story is a testament to the remarkable changes that can occur when we open our hearts to God’s grace.
