Centering Life on Christ

Devotion: “For Me to Live Is Christ, To Die Is Gain”

Scripture: Philippians 1:21

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Reflection:

The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 1:21 encapsulate the essence of Christian living: to live is Christ, to die is gain. Reflecting on his imprisonment, Paul emphasizes a life devoted to Christ, which transforms the perception of death from fear to an ultimate reward, promising eternal life and communion with Him.

The words of the Apostle Paul are among the most impactful and reflective in all of Scripture. His declaration in Philippians 1:21 encapsulates the essence of Christian living and the profound hope we find in Christ.

To truly grasp the meaning of this verse, we must take a moment to consider Paul’s situation. He was writing from a Roman prison, facing an uncertain future and having endured many hardships for the Gospel. His message reveals a deep commitment to Christ, undeterred by life’s challenges.

“For me to live is Christ.”

For Paul, every aspect of life revolved around Christ. He dedicated himself to spreading the Gospel, making Jesus known, and embodying His character. To Paul, life was about reflecting Christ’s love, humility, grace, and truth to those around him. Personal gain, comfort, or ambition held no place in his heart; everything hinged on his devotion to Jesus. His mission was all-consuming, filtering each action through the lens of Christ’s purpose.

As followers of Christ, we face a profound challenge. Are we truly centering our lives around Him? Is our primary goal to make Him known, to serve others, and to love as He has loved us? Do we begin each day with the powerful declaration, “For me to live is Christ”? Living a Christ-centered life involves surrendering our entire lives to His will and actively pursuing His calling, beyond merely attending church.

“To die is gain.”

This may seem surprising, but it reflects an encouraging truth for believers. Paul understands that death is not a loss but a profound gain. Why is this so? Because death serves as the gateway to eternal life alongside Christ. Paul was acutely aware that being with Christ surpasses any pleasure this world can provide (Philippians 1:23). Dying is a gain because it means entering the joy, peace, and glory promised by Christ.

For those who are in Christ, death should not be feared. Instead, it represents the ultimate triumph, the moment when our faith transforms into reality. It represents our freedom from the struggles, pain, and sin of this world as we finally embrace our Savior’s presence.

Testimony:

Throughout much of my life, I struggled to truly understand the profundity of this truth. Like many others, I chased after what the world deems valuable—success, comfort, and recognition. However, over the years, God has gently reshaped my perspective.

There was a significant season when I confronted a serious health scare, facing the daunting reality of mortality. This experience prompted me to reflect deeply: What truly matters? What will remain when everything else fades away?

I discovered that my relationships, achievements, and possessions matter less than the joy and purpose I find in living for Christ. My fear of death diminished as I grasped that being with Jesus is the ultimate reward. The idea of being with Him forever, without pain or sorrow, changed from something I feared to something I desired.

God revealed to me that whether I live or die, I belong to Him. I found solace in knowing that my life’s purpose revolves around Christ. To live is to glorify Him, while to die is to enter into everlasting communion with Him. My life is no longer centered on my desires—it’s all about Him.

I want to live out Christ’s love, trusting that when my time comes, I will be in the presence of the One who gave me life. It is a great honor to serve Him, and I look forward to being with Him forever.

Contemporary Application:

Living with Purpose: Take a moment today to consider how you can center your life around Christ each day. How can you ensure that your actions, words, and thoughts align with His mission?

Facing the fear of death: If you are afraid of death, remember that for believers, it represents not an end, but a beautiful new beginning. Embrace this reality to find peace and strength.

Eternal Perspective: The world offers many temporary pleasures, but true fulfillment comes from Christ. Let your life stand as a testament to this profound truth.

Prayer:

Thank You, Lord, for the powerful reminder that to live is for Christ and to die is gain. Help me to approach each day with intention, anchored in You and Your divine mission. Help me focus on an eternal perspective so I can let go of material possessions and look forward to being united with You. Give me the courage and peace to face death, knowing it brings me closer to You. In the name of Jesus, Amen.

Closing Thought:

As we grow in faith, remember that our lives should reflect Christ, and death is just a transition to a reward. May we find joy in the assurance that, in life and in death, we are eternally united with Christ.
