Timeless Encounter

Taj Mahal

taj mahal

As an avid traveler, my journeys frequently led me to amazing destinations with their own amazing stories to share. Of all these experiences, my journey to the Taj Mahal is undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable memories of my travels. It is a remarkable gem that will forever be woven into the fabric of my adventures and endure within me for a lifetime.

Many years ago, after attending an exhilarating India Live Cardiology Conference, in the vibrant heart of New Delhi, I took the opportunity for a day trip to Agra by train to explore the grandeur and history hidden within the walls of the magnificent Taj Mahal!

The Taj Mahal, celebrated for its architectural magnificence and symbol of enduring love, stands proudly on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. Conceived as an imperial tribute by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and was completed in 1653.

The Taj Mahal stands as an unparalleled testament to the craftsmanship and artistry of its artisans. The mausoleum, made entirely of pristine white marble, showcased exquisite carvings, stunning calligraphy, and meticulously manicured gardens that epitomized the flawless harmony of Mughal design. The central dome, flanked by four elegant minarets, reaches towards the heavens, while its beautiful reflecting pool adds an ethereal dimension.

Shah Jahan was deeply moved to build this magnificent monument as a tomb for his beloved wife. Legend has it that Mumtaz Mahal tragically passed away while giving birth, leaving him utterly devastated. To immortalize their profound love, he built the Taj Mahal as an awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece that would endure the trials of time, forever serving as a symbol of eternal devotion. Subsequently, when Shan Jahan died, he was buried in another tomb in the Taj Mahal.

As I wandered through its labyrinthine corridors and marveled at its intricate details, the Taj Mahal resonated deeply with me. It stood not just as a monument of love, but also as an epitome of human innovation and artistic skill.

I was amazed when I witnessed the masterful fusion of Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles; every element showcased impeccable artistry and left a lasting and unforgettable impression.

Visiting the Taj Mahal was a truly an unforgettable experience that allowed me to embark on a fascinating journey through time. It offered a fascinating look at India’s diverse history, with captivating stories with a lasting impact on culture and society. Like love itself, some creations transcend time’s confines and remain memorable experiences for all who experience them.

A unique journey of a lifetime

Watching an active volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii

I attended a cardiology event in Honolulu many years ago. After that, I flew with a professor from the University of Honolulu, Manoa, to the Big Island for a short vacation.

Remembering my trip to the Big Island gave me chills and goosebumps. I can still vividly see the live volcano eruptions, which are unforgettable parts of my travels. It became an unforgettable memory that will remain an integral part of my travel adventures for life.

The Big Island welcomed us with its lush landscapes and pristine beaches with open arms. The warm and welcoming locals truly enhanced our explorations, making them even more extraordinary. We didn’t know then that an extraordinary show would unfold before our eyes!

When we got to the Big Island, we were amazed by its different landscapes, like rainforests and lava fields. We were excited to see an active volcanic eruption at the Hawaai Volcanoes National Park. When we approached Kilauea Crater, an active volcanic crater spewing red-hot lava, our senses were overtaken with amazement!

As we gazed into the molten core of Earth, we felt an intimate link with its forces that shape it. The red and orange lava seemed to dance in front of the stars, creating an unreal spectacle, as if nature was performing exclusively for us.

Crackling lava and thunderous sounds from below provided a spectacular visual display, as lava flowed and cascaded. We could only marvel at nature’s raw power and beauty as this incredible spectacle unfolded before us.

At night, we stood quietly, amazed by the forces that formed the Hawaiian islands over thousands of years. The experience reminded us of the beautiful and ever-changing nature of Earth and our small place in it.

We explored the diverse landscapes of the Big Island on our second day, from the Waipio Valley to the summit of Mauna Kea. We were amazed by the stars above the clouds! Each moment served as proof of this island’s immense geological and cultural history.

We also paid a visit to the mesmerizing Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. The black sand at Punalu’u Beach was formed by volcanic eruptions when lava flowed into the ocean, leaving behind black sedimentary layers.

We are grateful to have witnessed live a volcanic eruption on Hawaii’s Big Island during our unforgettable journey. It was a remarkable and breathtaking experience that will remain etched in our memories forever.

If you are planning to visit Hawaii, include the Big Island into your itinerary.

An Iconic Bridge

Exploring the Bridge Over the River Kwai

Many years ago, I attended a Cardiology conference in Bangkok. After the conference, I visited the famous World War II Bridge over the River Kwai in the Kanchanaburi district of Thailand. The tour started at 6 am from the hotel and ended late into the night. The coach ride from the hotel to the bridge took several hours.

I was interested in The Bridge over the River Kwai after watching the World War II, 1957, Hollywood Epic movie with the same title. I wanted to explore into its history and tales. I wanted to discover stories from World War II and visit meaningful places that symbolize sacrifice and resilience.

A monument to History

The journey was long, but when I arrived at the bridge, I was impressed by its structure and the history. As I walked over the bridge, I felt its significance and the stories embedded in its iron and concrete. I finally touched this iconic old bridge loaded with stories of wartime history. This bridge was built by prisoners of war during World War II. It serves as a reminder of the hardships and sacrifices they endured. I learned about the strategic importance and the hard work of those who built it as I followed its history. The bridge is a symbol of the strength of those who fought and suffered in the war, and it reminded me of the sacrifices that were made. Walking on the iconic bridge, I felt very grateful for the people who went through so much hardship.

The Human Experience of World War II

As I explored the nearby museum, the history of World War II unfolded before my eyes. The exhibits displayed the experiences of Allied prisoners of war and Asian laborers who worked under tough conditions on building the Death Railway. Each artifact and photo reminded me of the high price of war and the strength that arose from its darkest moments in history. It was a humbling experience to see the personal belongings of those who had endured unimaginable hardships. From tattered uniforms to handwritten letters, each item told a story of resilience and courage amidst adversity. Reflecting on the narratives, I realized how humans can endure, rebuild, and find hope despite unimaginable suffering.

Kanchanaburi

My trip to Kanchanaburi mirrored that of many during World War II. The picturesque scenery on the coach ride offered breathtaking views of the lush landscapes and meandering rivers. I felt a contrast between the beautiful sceneries and the haunting history of this place while the coach moved.

Timeless Light and Sound Show Experience

At night, the bridge comes alive with the captivating show of lights and sounds. It uses vivid imagery and haunting tunes to resurrect its wartime history. The projected images brought the past to life, while the unfolding melodies transported me back in time. As I gazed at the remarkable display, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of appreciation for the event. The show was well-made and it was both entertaining and educational. It taught me about the importance of the River Kwai and its history. I experienced all this firsthand while realizing what had transpired along the River Kwai. After the light and sound show, the coach took me back to Bangkok, exhausted yet satisfied.

Hidden Gems

Moving beyond its iconic bridge, Kanchanaburi also has an incredible treasure trove of cultural richness which I did not have time to visit. Kanchanaburi has other museums and waterfalls showcasing the region’s history and traditions. River Kwai is not just a historical site, but an important part of the Thai community. The waterfalls showcased the natural beauty of Kanchanaburi and its surrounding areas.

Life-Changing Experience

Bridge Over the River Kwai left an indelible mark on me. The stories, resilience, and historic significance in every beam made my trip more than just a travel experience. It was a journey through history, making me think about how peace can be so fragile and how the past can still affects the present and the future. The River Kwai stands as a testament to the resilience of human spirit.

If you’re planning to visit Thailand, add this destination into your itinerary. I hope that you too will be touched by the history and the spirit of the place. It was a truly powerful experience to walk in the footsteps of those who came before us.

A Personal Journey through History and Culture

My trip to Phnom Penh was fascinating, giving me a glimpse into Cambodia’s rich history and vibrant present. Nestled between Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers, this city welcomed me with its blend of history, resilient spirits, and contemporary allure.

Killing Feilds and Genocide Museum

Exploring Phnom Penh began with an emotional visit to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum – two sites that reflect Cambodia’s dark history during Khmer Rouge rule and where visitors should acknowledge and honor those impacted by those tragedies.

Architectural Charm

Phnom Penh’s architecture is an eye-catching mix of Khmer, French colonial, and modern styles. The Royal Palace and the nearby Silver Pagoda were both impressive in their own ways. The Royal Palace was grand, while the Silver Pagoda had a peaceful atmosphere with a golden Buddha statue.

Wandering Through an Engaging Cultural Palette

Exploring the lively streets and markets provided me with a stunning variety of culture. I experienced it at its best at Psar Thmei Central Market where local crafts and delectable treats awaited me. Along Riverside, there were plenty of dining options and a lively nightlife scene to keep me occupied.

Gastronomic Adventures

My taste buds experienced an explosion of flavor as I traveled through Cambodia. From street-side delights like Fish Amok and Nom Banh Chok to fine dining restaurants offering both Khmer and international cuisines, each meal was an exciting discovery!

Heartwarming Hospitality

One of the things that made my journey unforgettable was experiencing such warm hospitality from its people. Locals shared stories and customs, making me feel immersed in their culture and making this journey truly memorable.

Christmas in my heart

Christmas in my heart

In my heart, a cozy glow,

Where Christmas whispers soft and low.

A twinkling joy, a warmth that gleams,

Filling each moment with festive dreams.

Tidings wrapped in love’s embrace,

Memories woven, time and space.

Bells that chime, a merry art,

Oh, how it sings, Christmas in my heart.

Candles aglow, a tranquil sight,

Stars above paint the night so bright.

Amidst the season’s gentle art,

Forever glows Christmas in my heart.

Winter Festivities

The History of Tong Yuen in Chinese Culture

Winter arrivals are celebrated worldwide with unique traditions and festivities. In Chinese culture, the winter solstice, known as Dongzhi or Dongji, holds profound significance and is commemorated with a cherished culinary delight called Tong Yuen, symbolizing familial unity and the passage of time.

The Essence of Dongzhi:

Dongzhi, which translates to “the extreme of winter,” falls on December 21st or 22nd each year, signifying the moment when the Yang (positive energy) starts to grow stronger as the Yin (negative energy) wanes, symbolizing the return of longer daylight hours and the gradual transition toward spring.

Cultural Significance:

At the heart of Dongzhi celebrations is the emphasis on family reunion and the expression of filial piety. Families gather to honor this occasion by making Tong Yuen, sweet rice balls served in a warm broth. These small, round dumplings are a symbol of togetherness and completeness, reflecting the unity and harmony among family members.

A Culinary Tradition:

The making of Tong Yuen is an art in itself, often involving a meticulous process. Glutinous rice flour is mixed with water to form a dough, which is then shaped into small balls. These balls are boiled until they float to the surface, indicating their readiness. The dish can be served in different ways. Some like it plain, while others prefer it filled with sweet fillings such as red bean paste, sesame, or peanuts.

Regional Variations:

Throughout China, different regions have their unique take on celebrating Dongzhi and preparing Tong Yuen. In Southern China, colorful Tong Yuen are popular, often made with vibrant natural dyes. In the North, it is more common to find larger Tong Yuen filled with delicious and satisfying ingredients.

Symbolism and Tradition:

The round shape of Tong Yuen holds deep symbolism, representing unity and completeness. It is believed that consuming these dumplings during Dongzhi brings good luck and prosperity for the coming year. As family members sit together, sharing this warming delicacy, they pay homage to their ancestors and strengthen familial bonds.

Modern Celebrations:

While traditional customs remain integral, modern interpretations of Dongzhi have evolved. Many Chinese families continue to honor this occasion by making Tong Yuen together, passing down the recipes through generations. Additionally, social media and online platforms have become avenues for sharing Dongzhi traditions and recipes, fostering a sense of community and preserving cultural heritage.

The Universal Message:

Beyond its cultural roots, the celebration of Dongzhi and the tradition of Tong Yuen convey a universal message of unity, gratitude, and hope. As the world becomes more diverse and multicultural, these rituals remind us of the importance of family, togetherness, and the cyclical nature of life.

Conclusion:

The winter solstice, marked by Dongzhi, encapsulates the essence of familial ties and cultural heritage. Tong Yuen is more than just a delicious dish. It symbolizes family bonds and the timeless traditions that unite generations. As we welcome the winter solstice each year, let us embrace the spirit of Dongzhi and savor the essence of Tong Yuen, celebrating unity, togetherness, and the timeless beauty of cultural traditions.

A Magical Adventure

Disneyland Visit

a photo of disney land park

The mere mention of Disneyland is enough to evoke feelings of nostalgia, excitement, and a touch of enchantment. When I visited Disneyland in Los Angeles, it felt like I was in a magical place where fairy tales and dreams come true.

Disneyland is located in Anaheim, California. Age doesn’t matter there and happiness is limitless. I entered through the magnificent entrance that welcomed me with the magical phrase, “You are now leaving today and entering a world filled with nostalgia, mystery, and dreams.” Little did I know how true these words would ring throughout my day.

The sight of Cinderella’s Castle looming majestically against the blue sky was an awe-inspiring start to my adventure. This magical kingdom is full of vibrant energy in every corner, like Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland. Each land offers a unique ambiance, promising a multitude of experiences for every visitor.

My first stop was Adventure land, where the thrilling pulse of adventure beckoned. I enjoyed riding the iconic Jungle Cruise, where I went on a boat ride through exotic rivers. Along the way, I saw lifelike animatronic wildlife and listened to funny skippers sharing entertaining stories. It was a hilarious experience. I felt like a daring archaeologist while experiencing the thrilling Indiana Jones Adventure.

As I ventured further, Fantasyland enveloped me in a world straight out of storybooks. The “It’s a Small World” ride was a symphony of colors and cultures, reminding me of the beauty in diversity. The enchanting carousel with its prancing horses and the whimsical Mad Tea Party ride added a touch of classic charm.

But the pinnacle of magic awaited me at the doorstep of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Stepping inside, I was transported to a world of princesses and fairy godmothers. Meeting Disney characters was like seeing childhood friends, and the parades filled me with joy.

Tomorrowland was full of innovation and futurism. I had an exciting space journey on Space Mountain and an intergalactic adventure with Star Wars characters on Star Tours.

No visit to Disneyland is complete without savoring the culinary delights that abound. Delicious Mickey-shaped snacks and tasty treats from New Orleans Square enhanced the whole experience.

As the day drew to a close and the sun dipped behind the horizon, I found myself reluctant to bid farewell to this kingdom of dreams. Disneyland is a magical place that combines nostalgia and innovation. Every moment feels like a special memory being created.

I left the park with souvenirs and photos, but also with a heart full of Disney magic. I will always remember the special moments I had at Disneyland. It is a place where dreams really come true.

Disneyland is more than just a theme park. It is a place where imagination is king and the magic of childhood is always treasured. I will always remember my visit to this enchanting kingdom as a way to remind myself of the magic inside me, until I come back.

Stitched in Time

A Century-Old Singer Sewing Machine

In the heart of our family’s history rests a treasured relic – a century-old Singer sewing machine, a timeless heirloom passed down through the generations. From the skilled hands of my great-grandmother-in-law to the rhythmic hum beneath my mother-in-law’s fingers, its stitches have woven the fabric of our family narrative.

As a child, my wife would watch in awe as her mother transformed simple fabrics into intricate garments with the precision of an artisan. The mechanical melody of the sewing machine became the soundtrack of her upbringing, a comforting lullaby that echoed through the years.

Now, as the custodian of this antique marvel, I find myself transported to a bygone era whenever I run my fingers over its aged, yet resilient, frame. Each scratch and wear mark tells a story of the countless hours spent crafting garments for loved ones and the memories stitched into every seam.

This Singer sewing machine is more than an antique; it is a vessel of memories. It holds the echo of my great-grandmother-in-law’s laughter and the warmth of my mother-in-law’s embrace as they worked diligently on it. It is a legacy and a silent connection to the past. Its metal and mechanics is a bridge that spans five generations.

Revisiting My School Days

Onions,Sugar Canes, and a Long-Lost Friend

In the fast-paced world of today, there’s something incredibly comforting about revisiting the memories of our school days. These formative years shape us in ways we may not fully realize until later in life. Join me on a journey back in time. I will recall my experiences at Methodist English Primary School. I will also recount my time at Methodist English Secondary School. This story isn’t just about academic lessons. It’s also about quirky traditions, unexpected superstitions, and a surprising reunion after almost fifty years.

Primary School Beginnings

It all started in 1959, when I embarked on my educational journey at Methodist English Primary School. While I may not remember every detail from those early years, one memory stands out vividly. It is my first day of school.

In a charmingly superstitious gesture, my parents secretly placed onions and sugar cane in my school bag. Why, you ask? Well, according to Cantonese tradition, “onion” symbolizes intelligence, and they hoped it would boost my smarts. Similarly, sugar cane represented sweetness, and they believed it would make me a kinder person.

Imagine the surprise when one of my classmates decided to explore my bag and discovered these unusual items. Laughter ensued, leaving me slightly red-faced. Little did I know that this classmate would soon become my closest friend.

A Remarkable Friendship

As fate would have it, the classmate who found my bag’s peculiar contents became my best friend throughout primary school. We embarked on countless adventures together. We spent hours in the school library, devouring books and exploring new worlds through literature. Our shared love for music led us to tune in to the radio for the latest pop songs. We listened to artists like Cliff Richard, The Shadows, The Beatles, and more.

My friend had a unique style, emulating Elvis Presley with his signature high hairstyle. But that wasn’t all; he also had a soft spot for Mary Poppins and even adopted the nickname “Poppy Leong.” Our days were filled with spinning tops, catapults, and marbles. We also enjoyed the thrill of capturing fighting fish from nearby rivers and spiders from towering trees.

We flew kites, rode bicycles, played games, and became active members of the Boy Scout movement. Those school days were a kaleidoscope of adventures and shared experiences.

A Bittersweet Farewell

As with all good things, my cherished friendship took an unexpected turn. One day, my best friend left school without a word of farewell. I was left bewildered and saddened. He had mentioned the possibility of relocating to Seremban with his family. However, he provided no forwarding location or any means of staying in touch.

For years, I wondered about him and the abrupt end to our friendship. It felt like a chapter left incomplete, a story without closure.

Reunited After 48 Years

Fast-forward to 2015, and something incredible happened. After an astonishing 48-year gap, my long-lost friend and I were reunited, all thanks to the marvels of modern technology. Social media platforms like Facebook, Google, WhatsApp, and email played a pivotal role in reconnecting us.

To my amazement, he was now living in Jakarta, Indonesia. I made not one but two visits to Jakarta solely to reunite with my dear friend. The passage of time had caused him to forget about onions, sugar cane, and his Elvis Presley hairstyle. He had even forgotten his beloved alias, Poppy Leong.

A Sad Ending

Unfortunately, my best friend passed away peacefully in Jakarta in 2020 due to lymphoma, leaving behind his wife. Rest in peace, my friend; we will meet again in heaven in the next life.
