Embracing God’s Unconditional Love and Eternal Life

The Gift of Salvation: Understanding John 3:16

This devotion emphasizes God’s unconditional love as shown in John 3:16, highlighting His sacrifice of Jesus for humanity’s salvation. It underscores the importance of embracing this love, sharing the gift of eternal life, and embodying compassion in our interactions with others. The devotion calls for spreading hope and positivity in communities.

Opening Prayer:

Heavenly Father,  thank You for Your Word and the abundant life it brings to each of us. Today, as we reflect on John 3:16, we ask that You open our hearts and minds to understand the depth of Your limitless love for humanity. Let’s embrace this beautiful truth joyfully, allowing it to transform our lives so we can share love and salvation with others. This can inspire others to feel hope and belonging, spreading positivity and warmth. Together, we can be agents of change, spreading this profound truth far and wide. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Devotion:

John 3:16 (NIV)  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

This verse is undeniably one of the most recognized passages in the entire Bible. There’s a significant reason for this popularity. It summarizes the Gospel’s core message in just a single verse. It spelled out God’s immense love, His ultimate sacrifice, and the invitation for eternal life. Remarkably, God did not  hold back His love. He did not wait for the world to achieve perfection or to be deserving.  Rather, His unwavering love is rooted in His own unchanging character.

He gave His only Son, Jesus, to bear our sins on the cross and suffer greatly, so we could receive the gift of salvation. This amazing act of love and sacrifice offers redemption to everyone who believes and accepts this grace. He showed His immense love and willingness to provide a path for humanity to be reconciled with Him. Ultimately, the choice remains ours, but the invitation to embrace this profound gift is extended to everyone without exception.

Illustrative Story:

Imagine a father whose child is gravely ill. The only cure is a rare medicine that is extremely costly. This father sells everything he owns, including his assets, home, car, and even his wedding ring, just to afford the treatment. He gives up everything to save his child.

Imagine a father who devotes his time and energy not just to his child, but also to helping strangers, even those who have hurt him in the past. His selfless act of reaching out to those who have hurt him reflects his character and commitment to compassion. A father like this brings hope and love, turning wounds into chances for growth and connection. Romans 5:8, tells us that God is such a Father.

Romans 5:8 NIV, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

This is only a small glimpse of the incredible sacrifice and unconditional love that God has demonstrated for us. He gave His one and only Son, not for the perfect, but for sinners like you and me. This act reflects the radical, unexplainable love of God that transcends human understanding and expectations. It is a profound testament to the lengths to His divine love will go to reach the lost.

Luke 19:10 NLT, For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.

Contemporary Application:

In a world where love often comes with conditions and demands, the profound message of John 3:16 resonates deeply, reminding us of the unwavering and unconditional love that God has for each of us. No matter how distant you feel or any shame you might experience, the important truth is that God loves you completely and unconditionally. He demonstrated it by giving His Son, restoring the vital relationship between humanity and Himself. Embrace the fact that you are deeply loved by God, and let His love guide your interactions. Share this uplifting message with someone who needs reassurance.

The gift of eternal life is a valuable treasure meant to be shared. Sharing this extraordinary gift enriches your lives and touches the hearts of others. Ultimately, the more you give this gift away, the more it multiplies and transforms lives in meaningful ways.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the ultimate expression of agape love, a love that is unconditional and boundless. Thank you for Your sacrifice in dying for our sins, granting us the promise of eternal life. Help us live each day aware of Your love and grace. Help us align our actions and thoughts with Your heart and compassion, so we can embody the kindness and love You show to others. May we be instruments of Your love, reaching out to those in need and offering support and understanding. Let our words and deeds mirror Your love, creating a ripple effect of positive change in our communities. Through this, we hope to inspire others to also reflect Your compassion in their lives. In Your name, I pray, Amen.

Jim Elliot: A Legacy of Faith and Sacrifice

Devotion: He Is No Fool

This devotion emphasizes the profound truth that true fulfillment comes from selflessly giving oneself to God, as illustrated by Jim Elliot’s life and sacrifice. It encourages prioritizing eternal values over temporary gains, fostering a deeper faith and commitment to God’s purpose. Reflecting on personal sacrifices can lead to significant spiritual growth and impact.

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” – Jim Elliot

Opening Prayer:

Lord, as we embark on this day, we humbly ask that you open our eyes wide to the deeper truths that genuinely matter in life. Help us prioritize lasting values over temporary gains and give us the strength to live courageously and with conviction. Help us release what we can’t hold onto in this world, so we can embrace and appreciate the lasting and meaningful gifts. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Devotion:

Jesus shared an important truth in Matthew 16:25 when He said, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.”

This principle was powerfully shown by Jim Elliot, who demonstrated that true Christian faith goes beyond comfort and is based on selflessly giving oneself to God’s will. In our daily lives, we often cling to temporary things like money, status, security, and the illusion of control, believing they can bring us lasting happiness. We may overlook the eternal treasures God has promised, such as joy, purpose, true peace, and everlasting life. Therefore, it is important to consider what we are holding onto that prevents us from embracing what truly matters.

Jim Eliot:

Jim Elliot, who was only 28 years old when he tragically died, dedicated his life to sharing the gospel with the Waodani people in Ecuador, a group known for their traditional practices, including cannibalism. In his brave attempt to evangelize this unreached people group, he and his team were tragically killed by the native people who misunderstood their intentions. Prior to this heart-wrenching martyrdom, Jim penned profound reflections in his journal, capturing his convictions. Many may see Jim’s choice to sacrifice his future, education, family, and safety for the gospel as foolish, but he understood a deeper truth: life is temporary, while acts of service to Christ have lasting importance.

His words capture the gospel’s main message: Jesus willingly left heaven to walk among us and inspires us to carry our own cross daily, embodying the sacrifices we should make. By dying to our own desires and ambitions, we discover a deeper, more fulfilling life. Giving brings true fulfillment and joy, and by letting go of earthly attachments, we gain even more. This profound truth serves as a guiding principle for our faith journey.

Contemporary Application:

In our daily lives, we often encounter challenging situations that test our resolve. This might mean forgiving someone even when it’s hard, being generous even when it’s challenging, or following God’s calling, even if it requires loss of personal comfort or major sacrifices. It can mean letting go of a cherished dream that no longer fits with God’s purpose for us, or courageously surrendering our fears about the future. Each choice requires deep faith and trust in God’s plan, demonstrating our commitment to align with His will. Ultimately, these decisions open the door to spiritual growth and foster a deeper connection with God.

Jim Elliot’s conviction applies not only to missionaries and martyrs but serves as a call for anyone seeking a meaningful and purposeful life. Eternal rewards often come from sacrifices made in our lives, a truth that resonates with many. This perspective may seem unreasonable to some, but it powerfully expresses faith in a greater plan. Focusing on what truly matters helps us make a meaningful impact in our lives and others’.

In a world focused on comfort, fame, and safety, Jim Elliot reminds us that a truly fulfilling life is one dedicated to Jesus. His extraordinary story invites us to engage in profound introspection, challenging us to contemplate not only the essence of our existence but also the core beliefs and values for which we would be ready to risk everything, including our own lives. His bold choices encourage us to reflect on our commitments and our readiness to defend our faith amid challenges. Ultimately, Jim Elliot’s legacy challenges us to align our priorities with the higher purpose of serving something greater than ourselves.

Reflection Questions:

What is something you are holding onto that God may be asking you to release?

Are you living for things you can’t keep, or investing in what you cannot lose?

What does “losing your life for Christ” look like in this season?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the inspiring lives of Jim Elliot and others who dedicated themselves to Your service, even in the face of danger. We seek the strength and determination to reflect that same courage in our own lives as we face challenges. Show us where to let go and trust You completely with our lives. Our heart’s desire is to achieve the eternal treasures that can never be taken away from us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Eternal Hope

Jesus Christ, Savior of the World

Excerpt

Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, lived a life of love, service, and humility. His teachings continue to shape lives today, offering hope, forgiveness, and grace. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus opened the way to eternal life, transforming hearts and minds for generations. Discover His timeless message.

Son of God

Jesus Christ stands at the center of history as the most influential and transformative figure ever known. For Christians around the world, He is not just a historical figure. He is the Savior of the world and the Son of God. He is God in a human body. He is the revelation of God to humanity.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth”, John 1:14.

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known”, John 1:18.

He is also the ultimate example of Love, Grace, and Truth. His life, death, and resurrection have forever changed humanity, offering hope, salvation, and the promise of eternal life.

The Life of Jesus

Born over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem, Jesus lived a humble life in Nazareth as the son of a carpenter. He began His public ministry at the age of 30. He was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan river. From that moment, Jesus proclaimed the Good News of the Kingdom of God, calling people to repentance and faith.

During His ministry, Jesus performed miracles—healing the sick, raising the dead, calming storms, exorcising demons, and feeding multitudes. These miracles were signs of His divine authority, but His primary message was love, forgiveness, and grace. He reached out to the marginalized, the broken, and the forgotten, embodying His teaching of radical compassion.

His Teachings

The teachings of Jesus, particularly those recorded in the Gospels, have shaped the moral framework of societies around the world. At the heart of His message is love—love for God and love for others. When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart. Love Him with all your soul and with all your mind.” He then added, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life“, John 3:16.

Jesus challenged cultural norms by teaching love for enemies, the forgiveness of wrongs, and the importance of peacemaking. His parables inspire us to show mercy. Examples include the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. They encourage us to seek reconciliation. These teachings stay relevant today. Many individuals and movements across the world draw inspiration from Jesus’ example to promote justice, kindness, and equality.

His Death and Resurrection

The ultimate act of love came through His death on the cross. Betrayed by one of His disciples, He was arrested. He was falsely accused. He was sentenced to die by crucifixion. This execution was brutal and shameful in the ancient world. But His death was not just a tragedy; for Christians, it was the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Three days after His death, Jesus rose from the grave, defeating death and offering eternal life to all who believe. His resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith, symbolizing victory over sin and the promise of new life. This belief continues to give hope and comfort to millions, especially in times of suffering and uncertainty.

His Impact on the World

The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have had an immeasurable impact on the world. They have shaped entire civilizations. They have also influenced culture, art, law, and social justice. His teachings have inspired countless individuals to pursue lives of service and compassion. From hospitals founded in His name to global humanitarian efforts rooted in His example, Jesus’ legacy continues to transform lives.

Even in contemporary times, His message is still relevant. Consider the stories of people who have experienced personal transformation through His teachings. One modern example is Jeanette, who found hope and healing after battling addiction. Through faith in Jesus, she found not only forgiveness, but a new sense of purpose. She eventually opened a rehabilitation center to help others break free from the chains of substance abuse. This is just one of many stories where lives have been changed by the power of His message.y

The Personal Relevance of Jesus Today

In a world filled with fear, division, and uncertainty, Jesus offers peace, hope, and unity. His teachings offer a guide for navigating life’s challenges. They do this not only through faith but also by living with love, humility, and grace. Many people today find personal strength in Jesus’ words. They find this strength whether they are facing personal struggles, loss, or the anxieties of daily life.

For those looking for purpose and meaning, Jesus’ invitation remains simple. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). His message of unconditional love and grace is timeless. It offers peace in the midst of turmoil. It also provides hope for a brighter future.

Making His Message Accessible

While Jesus’ teachings are profound, they can also be simplified for wider understanding. Concepts like grace and salvation are foundational to Christian belief. They are essentially about God’s love for us—undeserved, unconditional, and transformative. Salvation through Jesus means receiving forgiveness for our mistakes. It also promises a renewed life, free from guilt or fear.

His parables—simple stories like the Sower and the Seed or the Lost Sheep—illustrate deeper truths in ways anyone can understand. This is why Jesus’ teachings resonate across cultures and generations. Breaking down these theological concepts into everyday language helps more people connect with His message. It allows His message to inspire change in their lives.

Conclusion

Jesus Christ is more than a historical figure. He is the Savior of the world. He offers love, grace, and eternal hope to all who believe. His life, death, and resurrection continue to inspire and transform lives today, just as they did over two millennia ago. In a world hungry for peace, His message of love and forgiveness offers the greatest gift: salvation and eternal life.

What must I do to be saved?: devotion

Dr. Andrew C S Koh

mock-up image of a bookshelf
bookshelf

The Jew’s favorite question to Jesus was what they must do to inherit eternal life. The rich, young ruler man was no different. Luke 18:23 described him as very rich. Matthew 19:20 described him as young. Luke 18:1 described him as a ruler. Mark 10:17 said he ran to Jesus and knelt down to worship Him. He was very sincere and desperately wanted eternal life.

Passage

Luke 18:18-24

.

18 A certain ruler asked him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 Jesus asked him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good, except one: God. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Don’t commit adultery,’ ‘Don’t murder,’ ‘Don’t steal,’ ‘Don’t give false testimony,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’”, Exodus 20:12-16, Deuteronomy 5:16-29. 21 He said, “I have observed all these things from my youth up.” 22 When Jesus heard these things, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have, and distribute it to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was very rich. 24 Jesus, seeing that he became very sad, said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into God’s Kingdom! (read the rest of Luke 18 on your own)

Luke 18:18-24

Reflection

The rich young ruler asked Jesus what he must do to possess eternal life. He addressed Jesus respectfully as a Good Teacher. Jesus asked why he called Him good. Was he implying that Jesus was God?  Jesus quoted the last 5 of the 10 commandments. The man happily ticked all the boxes. ‘I passed’ or so he thought! But Jesus gave him one more box to tick. Liquidate all his assets, donate all the proceeds to charity, follow Jesus, and inherit eternal life. He could not tick this box. He walked away from the deal with great sorrow because he was very rich.

What went wrong? Jesus diagnosed his spiritual condition as covetousness. Here was a man who loved possessions more than God. The radical surgery for this condition is to take away possessions. He chose to walk away from Jesus. He was very close to inheriting eternal life (salvation) but missed it. Sincerity will not do it. Keeping a set of laws will not do it. Only a radical change of heart will do it. Salvation required a spiritual heart transplant. He must be born again, John 3:3.

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”

John 3:3, NKJV

Here was a sinner who thought he was righteous (self-righteous). Did he pass the test of law-keeping? No way! Jesus exposed his true spiritual condition and gave him a chance to confess his sin. When asked to liquidate and donate to charity, the rich young ruler walked away from Jesus. It is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. This is a hyperbole, an exaggerated figure of speech. The eye of a needle is a tiny little aperture. The camel is the biggest animal in Israel. But God can make this happen. Zaccheaus was a very rich man but he was saved, Luke 19:1-10.

The disciples left everything to follow Jesus and they will inherit eternal life, Luke 18:29-30.

He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left houses, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, for God’s Kingdom’s sake, who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life.”

Luke 18:29-30

Application

Jesus’ injunction to liquidate and donate to charity is a specific injunction to the man in this story. This is not a universal call to poverty as a prerequisite to salvation. His love for money prevented him from following Jesus. Instead of possessing money, money possessed him.

The challenge to you and me today is to hold lightly to the things of the world. Prioritize your lives and put Jesus first before everything else. You can serve only one master. Will you serve Jesus or money?

Follow Jesus wholeheartedly. Do not let anything stand in the way.

So, what must you do to inherit eternal life?

It is not what you do. It is what Jesus had already done for you on the cross 2000 years ago. Jesus paid the price of your sin for you on the cross. All you need to do is to believe Him. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ and not by work. Ephesians 2:8-9.

for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the timeless lesson on the rich, young ruler. Help us not to covet. Help us to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. Help us to surrender our lives to You and make You the center of our lives. Help us to love You vertically and help others horizontally. Thank You for salvation by grace through faith in Christ,  in Jesus’ name, Amen.
