When You Don’t Know What to Say

DEVOTION

Scripture

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. Romans 8:26

Reflection

The Holy Spirit really comes through when you’re feeling low, especially when you struggle to find the right words or don’t really know how or what to pray. It can feel really tough to say what you need or how you’re feeling in those moments, but that’s exactly when the Holy Spirit steps in.

When you’re having a tough time opening up about your feelings or thoughts, the Holy Spirit is there to help, bridging that gap between you and God in ways that are hard to put into words. This comforting idea is perfectly shown in Romans 8:26.

Some days, trying to express how you feel may seem impossible. You know, those times when the pain you’re dealing with is really heavy, or your thoughts are all tangled up, or you’re just plain worn out.

On those tough days, it’s crucial to keep in mind that there’s no need to feel pressured to meet anyone’s expectations; you can relax a little.

The Bible reminds you that the Holy Spirit is there for you, helping you to pray in the spirit.

It’s totally normal if some days all you manage is a sigh, a tear trickling down, or just softly saying, “Help, Lord.”

In the big picture, that’s more than enough.

God knows what’s really going on in your heart way better than any fancy words or long speeches ever could.

It’s important to remember that it’s not the complexity of your expression that matters, but the sincerity behind it. Your heartfelt plea is valued immeasurably more than polished language.

Meditation

Take a moment to really soak in the quiet around you. Don’t worry about thoughts or words. Just imagine yourself snuggled up in the warm, loving embrace of God.

Let the Holy Spirit help you connect your heart with His divine energy, gently guiding you through this really special moment.

Let yourself soak in this calm vibe of the Holy Spirit. Let Him wrap around you and bring you peace. Try to keep away from anything that might mess with this chill moment.

Immerse yourself in this sacred experience, permitting His divine energy to flow through you and nurture your inner being. Allow yourself to be led by His presence and to feel the depth of this spiritual communion in your soul.

When you’re feeling down and can’t go on, just remember that He’s super strong and right there with you. In those weak moments, His strength really stands out, turning your challenges into wins.

It’s nice to know that His grace really goes above and beyond. It’s overflowing to tackle all your needs and struggles. Believe that by showing your true self and being open, you can feel His help and strength in ways you never thought possible.

Finding Clarity in the Mist

Through the Mist

A devotional for those walking by faith, not by sight

Scripture

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

Reflection

There are seasons when the path ahead is veiled, when the horizon disappears into fog and every step feels uncertain.

In these moments, clarity is not a gift of vision but a fruit of trust. God does not always part the mist. Sometimes, He simply walks with us through it.

The mist is not punishment. It is invitation. A call to lean not on our own understanding, but on the whisper of the Holy Spirit.

In the hush of obscurity, we learn to listen. In the absence of landmarks, we learn to follow the Shepherd’s voice.

Faith flourishes not in the sunlight of certainty, but in the twilight of surrender.

And as we walk, one prayerful step at a time, the mist begins to glow, not with answers, but with His Presence.

Poetic Grace

The fog may blur the edges,

but grace sharpens the soul.

Not every path is lit, some are simply held.

And in the hush between heartbeats, He is there.

Prayer

Lord, when the way ahead is hidden, help us trust the You who sees beyond the mist. Teach us to walk by faith, not by sight. Let Your Word be our compass, Your Spirit our guide, and Your love our light. Amen.

Overcoming Fear with Faith

An Unexpected Messenger

Scripture:
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3

Observation

Life often surprises us with sudden and unsettling encounters. It could be something small. It could be a sound, a movement, or an uninvited guest. Yet, it shakes our sense of safety and control. These moments remind us that fear can enter our hearts in an instant.

Interpretation

Fear is a natural human response, but faith calls us to lift our eyes higher. The psalmist knew fear well, yet he chose to anchor his heart in God’s protection. An unexpected disturbance in the clinic may seem like nothing more than an inconvenience. Yet, spiritually, it becomes a symbol. Life is fragile, uncertain, and outside of our control. Yet, God is our refuge.

Every “unexpected visitor” in life comes in various forms. These may include sudden challenges, unwelcome news, or mysterious interruptions. Each can be seen as a messenger reminding us to trust God afresh.

Application

  • When fear strikes suddenly, pause and breathe a prayer of trust.
  • See interruptions as invitations to depend more deeply on God.
  • Remember that nothing catches Him by surprise. He is with you in every moment.

Prayer

Lord, when life brings unexpected visitors, help me to respond with faith instead of panic. These visitors may come in fear, anxiety, or sudden change. Teach me to trust You in every moment, knowing You are my shield and my comfort. May even life’s mysteries draw me closer to You. Amen.

Exploring Theology: My Journey in Bible College- publish ready

bible school

Excerpt

The author reflects on his transformative experience at the Bible College of New Zealand from 1999 to 2002. During this time, a postgraduate diploma in Theology deepened his understanding of spirituality. He engaged with diverse peers and faced challenging academics. This fostered lasting friendships and personal growth. These experiences ultimately shaped his belief and life perspectives significantly.

Bible College of New Zealand

I attended the Bible College of New Zealand in Auckland from 1999 to 2002. I pursued a postgraduate diploma in Theology. Strong faith and a wish to learn drove this important decision. These motivations led me to explore the realm of theology and spirituality. I didn’t realize how much this experience would change my perspectives, values, and understanding of myself and the world.

The campus was lively, especially among the Asian community, who thrived in the energetic atmosphere. Every corner buzzed with lively conversations in a mix of languages, discussing theology, culture, and the complexities of life. The diverse students from around the world added a unique richness to the experience, offering a variety of perspectives. It started as just a study space. It evolved into a lively mix of global beliefs. It also reflected shared human experiences.

Mornings began with prayer meetings in the peaceful chapel. People came together to unite their diverse traditions and backgrounds for a common purpose. These gatherings not only set a reflective tone for the day but cultivated a sense of community among us. The lectures built on a spiritual foundation. They were intellectually challenging and explored biblical exegesis, church history, mission, pastoral care, spiritual formation, and systematic theology in depth. The professors and lecturers were experienced scholars and passionate educators who encouraged critical thinking and expanded our understanding.

Assignments were central to my studies, each offering a unique challenge to explore scripture and its profound truths. In this endeavor, the library quickly transformed into my second home, a sanctuary of knowledge and inspiration. I was surrounded by tall bookshelves filled with valuable ancient commentaries, thoughtful theological journals, and essential reference materials. Days blurred together as I spent hours studying, crafting essay ideas, and preparing for exams.

Despite the demanding academic environment, the surrounding community was lively and welcoming. The Asian students took the initiative to organize potluck dinners, showcasing delightful flavors and dishes from their homelands. We enjoyed spicy curries, savory dumplings, and fragrant rice dishes. We sat around the table. We shared heartfelt stories about our countries and cultures. We also talked about how God had uniquely guided each of us on this journey. This experience created strong bonds that overcame language barriers and built lasting friendships, enriching our lives long after college.

Occasionally, there were moments of struggle that felt almost insurmountable. Late nights grappling with tough theological ideas left me exhausted. The stress of looming deadlines made me feel homesick. Yet, through all these challenges, there emerged a profound sense of purpose that fueled my journey. The knowledge I gained during this time was not merely academic. The experience was transformative and life changing. Every lecture, workshop, tutorial, discussion, and assignment deepened my understanding of God’s word. They revealed its practical applications in my life and ministry goals.

Graduation day in 2002 proved to be a truly bittersweet moment, encapsulating years of hard work and dedication. Wearing my cap and robe and proudly holding my diploma, I looked out at the familiar faces. My professors, lecturers, tutors, classmates, family, and friends who had supported me throughout my journey. The students came from different places, each with their own unique stories. Now, as they face new beginnings, they were ready to live out their faith in meaningful ways.

This day was a poignant reminder of the achievements behind me and the exciting challenges that lay ahead. Those three formative years at Bible College were not just about the attainment of a diploma. They were an important journey that prepared me for a greater purpose in the future. During this time, I faced many enriching and challenging situations that significantly shaped my character, beliefs, and spiritual growth. This unique journey had valuable experiences and friendships. It is an unforgettable part of my life. It continues to inspire me daily.

The lessons and strong relationships I built during my early years have greatly shaped my personal and professional life. These experiences have shaped my perspectives and decisions, leaving an indelible mark on my path ahead. I often think about the relationships and knowledge I gained, appreciating their lasting impact on who I am today. The significance of those moments continues to resonate with me as I navigate the future.

Memoirs of a Doctor

Reflections on a 68-Year-Life Story

A Journey Through Time

Introduction

In an age when stories are often shared through social media updates, reading a memoir is something truly captivating. A memoir allows readers to travel back in time and experience another’s journey firsthand.

Welcome to my journey as a doctor. I want to share my memoir with you, which spans 68 years of memories and meaningful experiences.

From Birth to Retirement

This memoir begins in 1952 with the author’s birth—an unassuming and humble start that would ultimately touch many lives. Through each chapter, you will witness personal and professional development across milestones celebrated and endured along the way.

Tanjong Malim to New Zealand

Growing up in Tanjong Malim, the author recalls European missionaries’ visits, which brought with them not only gospel preaching but also entertaining movie nights that left an indelible mark on young minds.

The tale then takes an international leap, traveling across continents to New Zealand, where the author pursued higher education. A change of scenery provides new opportunities and challenges, opening up further explorations of faith and purpose.

Addressing the Asian Financial Crisis

This memoir transports you back to 1997, an eventful year marked by the Asian Financial Crisis that affected Malaysia with depreciating currency and stock market changes, leaving residents reeling financially until an opportunity presented itself: an affordable house in Ipoh.

Bible College Years

As the year 2000 unfolds, a pivotal change takes place as the author embarks on his theological studies at Laidlaw Bible College (formerly the Bible College of New Zealand). These years of theological studies, academic growth, and spiritual enrichment would lay a strong foundation for his life of service and devotion.

Exploring the Challenges of Medicine

Once he completed his theological studies, the author returned to medicine, this time in Wellington, New Zealand. While his medical career flourished successfully, personal sacrifices had to be made when family members took different paths in life. Facing challenges such as on-call 24/7 services and managing an outpatient clinic exposed what truly motivates the author.

An Accident Occurs

As we explore this memoir, a pivotal moment arises. A post-Christmas dinner in 2019 turns into an unexpected accident, leading to a fall that caused paralysis and ultimately led to life-threatening tetraplegia and life-threatening circumstances. From there comes an amazing medical journey filled with scans, spinal surgery, and rehabilitation. A test of faith and spiritual growth.

Rehabilitation and Recuperation

As the author begins intensive rehabilitation, his story takes an optimistic turn as he fights back against the global COVID-19 pandemic and attempts to regain mobility. This chapter serves as a testament to human perseverance and unflinching support from loved ones.

With Thanks from a Grateful Heart

Gratefulness overflows as the author expresses his thanks to God and those who helped during a time of need. Not just medical professionals but also friends, family, and a community that rallied around.

Living in God’s Goodness

In his memoir, the author revisits faith’s message as he recalls missionaries who once spread it. Faith and God’s enduring grace are acknowledged as sources of strength.

Retired and Renewed

In 2020, the author retires after 48 years in medical practice, marking an exciting new phase of life full of opportunities for writing, preaching, and self-discovery. This chapter represents not an ending but rather a beginning.

An Exciting Adventure Well-Traveled

“Memoirs of a Doctor” offers you an engrossing journey into the life of a medical professional, theologian, and resilient soul. His tale reminds you to cherish every moment in life while keeping faith at its center.

Author’s Reflection

The memoir concludes with an epilogue, in which the author reflects upon his writing process, the pandemic outbreak, and all of life’s blessings, reinforcing hope and resilience and leaving readers feeling thankful for all of life’s complexities and turns.

As we conclude this chapter of “Memoirs of a Doctor,” it’s wise to reflect upon Isaiah 40:26’s words: “Look up into the heavens; Who created all these stars? His power and might bring out one after another like an army; calling each by its name.” Not a single star goes missing under His watchful care!

May this memoir inspire you to look back on your own journey, take stock of all that lies around you, and find comfort in human resilience.

Acknowledgment

The author wishes to express his heartfelt thanks for sharing this journey with family and friends, medical colleagues, mentors, and spiritual guides. Their help has been instrumental in shaping this memoir.

About the Author

This author is a retired doctor, preacher, writer, and blogger with a heart filled with gratitude and a strong passion for sharing life’s lessons through words.

Sharing this journey will inspire others. Please leave any thoughts or reflections in the comment section below; your voice exemplifies storytelling’s lasting power.

Faith: devotion

Prayer:

Dr. Andrew C S Koh

3 D book cover

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for all that You have done for us in our lives. We acknowledge that You are the creator of the universe and God of the Bible. Thank You for speaking to us through the inspired, infallible, and inerrant words of the Holy Scripture, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Setting

A centurion is a Roman soldier who had 100 soldiers under his command. In the first-century world, masters treat their servants like a piece of furniture. They were not obligated to treat their servants with kindness. However, this centurion was very kind to his servant when he was on the verge of dying. Even though he was a Gentile, he loved the Jews and helped them build a synagogue. He sent Jewish elders to beg Jesus to come to his house and heal his servant.

Luke 7:6-10

6 Jesus went with them. When he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof. 7 Therefore I didn’t even think myself worthy to come to you but say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.” 10 Those who were sent, returning to the house, found that the servant who had been sick was well.

Luke 7:6-10

Commentary

As Jesus was approaching the centurion’s house, the centurion had a sudden change of heart. He realized that he was not worthy to receive Jesus into his home. He sent his friends to Jesus asking him not to come to his house but to pray for healing from a distance.

His faith was incredible and amazing. He recognized Jesus’ authority. He knew that His word was as good as His presence. He believed that Jesus could cure his servant from a distance.

Jesus was amazed at the faith of the centurion. Even the Jews did not have such great faith. The centurion’s friends returned to the centurion’s house to find the servant recovered! Jesus was omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. He healed the centurion’s servant through a private miracle from a distance. The public was not privy to the miracle. Only Jesus, the apostles, the centurion, his family, and his friends knew about the miracle.

Application

Faith moves mountains. Even a mustard seed faith is enough to start a miracle. How big is your faith? Do you pray with faith? Jesus will mountains for you if you pray with faith according to His will.

Faith is to know that you will get what you hoped for even when your physical eyes cannot see it coming.

You cannot please God if you do not have faith, Hebrews 11:6.

Faith is your third pair of eyes. Walk by faith with your spiritual eyes, 2 Corinthians 5:7.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen

Hebrews 11:1

Without faith, it is impossible to be well pleasing to him, for he who comes to God must believe that he exists and that he is a rewarder of those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:16

for we walk by faith, not by sight

2 Corinthians 5:7

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the lesson on faith. Help us to walk by faith and not by sight. Open our spiritual eyes of faith to see into the spiritual dimension. Increase our faith. Help us with our unbelief, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Sowing and reaping: devotion

Dr. Andrew C S Koh

mock up image, box sets

John 4:30-45

After exposing and convicting the Samaritan woman of her sin, Jesus revealed  that He was the Messiah she was waiting for.  She immediately dropped her water bucket and went to town to share her testimony and invited the people to come and see the Messiah.

30 They went out of the city, and were coming to him. 31 In the meanwhile, the disciples urged him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.” 33 The disciples therefore said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Don’t you say, ‘There are yet four months until the harvest?’ Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already. 36 He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit to eternal life; that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 For in this the saying is true, ‘One sows, and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you haven’t labored. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” 39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in him because of the word of the woman, who testified, “He told me everything that I did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they begged him to stay with them. He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “Now we believe, not because of your speaking; for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world.” 43 After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee.

John 4:30-45

Reflection

Jesus told His disciples to open their eyes and see the Samaritan people coming towards them with their white hats. The field (Samaritan people) was ripe for harvest. The Samaritan woman sowed the seed of the gospel message into the Samaritan people (the field). The seed bear fruits, and the disciples reaped the harvest. In evangelism, the sower and the reaper worked as a team to win souls.

Today, you may be sowing the seed of the gospel into someone’s life.  One day another Christian will come along and reap the harvest by getting that person to say the sinner’s prayer. This is how evangelism work, 1 Cor 3:6.

The woman’s testimony was powerful. Many Samaritans believed in Jesus through her testimony. Jesus stayed with them two more days, and more Samaritans believed in Him. The woman’s testimony brought the Samaritans to Christ. Their encounter with Christ convinced them that Christ is the Saviour of the world.

The Samaritans acknowledged Jesus as the Savior of the world. Note the progressive revelation of Christ’s identity. In verse 9, she called Him a Jew, in verses 11 and 15, Sir, in verse 19, a prophet, in verse 29, Christ, and in verse 42, Savior of the world.

Jesus and His disciples travelled north from Samaria to Galilee, bypassing Nazareth.. The Galileans welcomed Jesus because they saw the miracles He did at Jerusalem during the Passover.

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow

1 Corinthians 3:6

Application

Many Samaritans believed and encountered Christ personally because of the woman’s testimony. Many of your contacts will believe and encounter Christ personally because of your testimony. Write out and rehearse your testimony. Include three parts to your testimony, the before, the during, and the after. Write about how you were before you know Christ, how you came to know Christ, and, how you are after you know Christ. Share it out on social media, with colleagues, friends, and family. You may be the only Bible that people will ever read. Personal evangelism is very satisfying and rewarding.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the beautiful story of this un-named Samaritan woman who met Christ and shared her testimony with other Samaritans. We pray for opportunities to share our testimonies to family, neighbours, colleagues, and friends. We pray for divine insight and understanding into Your word. We present our bodies as living sacrifices and spiritual acts of worship, holy and pleasing to You, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

The beginning: devotion

Devotion

a mock-up happy new year greeting
hew year greeting

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth

Reflection

The Bible begins with, in the beginning, God. When was the beginning? Who created the universe and when? The Hebrew word for create is bara, which means, to create something out of nothing. In the beginning, in the eternity past, God created the entire universe into existence out of nothing.

God has no beginning because He is transcendent and outside our time-space continuum. He is pre-existent, self-existent, eternal, from everlasting to everlasting, from the eternity past to the eternity future. He is the alpha and the omega, the first and the last, the Alef and the Tau, the A and the Z, the author and finisher of our faith.

God created the universe in six days. God’s reckoning of time is not the same as our reckoning of time. One day for God can be long as 1000 years and 1000 years for God can be as short as one day. Time is relative. According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, if you travel close to the speed of light time slows down. How fast can God travel? If God travels faster than the speed of light, time will standstill and the clock will stop ticking! So, 2000 years of our time can be as short as 2 days in God’s time. This is something for us to think about.

1 Peter 3:8, but don’t forget this one thing, beloved, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

There are three theories regarding the universe. The young age theory postulates the universe to be 6000-plus years old. The old age theory postulates the universe to be 4.5 billion-plus years old. The gap theory postulates a time gap of billions of years between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2.

The Bible is not ambiguous. The Bible says that God created the universe into existence. The Bible did not say mention any big explosion in space.

The Gospel of John begins with in the beginning, Jesus Christ.

John 1:1, in the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.

Jesus Christ was the Word, who was with God, and who was God.

Application

I find it is easier to believe in creation than in the big bang explosion. If you believe that God created the heavens and the earth, you will not have any difficulty believing the rest of the Bible. So, how big is your God? And how big is your faith?

Romans 12:2, J.B Philips, Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands, and moves towards the goal of true maturity.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for the anointing of the Holy Spirit to enlighten and give us wisdom and understanding into Your word. Open our hearts, minds, eyes, ears, and spirits to receive, understand, hear, see, feel, and apply Your word of eternal life into our very own lives, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

For unto us a Child is born: devotion

Dr. Andrew C S Koh

Isaiah 9:6

For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

Reflection

Isaiah prophesied the birth of Jesus Christ 700 years before it happened. Isn’t this mind-bogging? Who can make a prophesy 700 years before it happen and fulfill it 700 years later? The statistical chance of this occurring is 1 in 10 to the power of 17.  Suppose you put 10 to the power of 17 pieces of paper into a huge container and mark out one as special. If you pick out one piece of paper at random, the chance of getting that specially marked-out paper is 1 in 10 to the power of 17. This is statistically impossible but with God all things are possible!

A child is born to us

2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was born on Christmas day for us.

A son is given to us

2000 years ago, God gave His Son, Jesus Christ to us on Christmas day, to save us from sin and death, John 3:16. God, the Father, and Jesus Christ are the first and second persons of the Trinity respectively.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16

And the government will be on his shoulder

Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords who carries the whole world upon His shoulders.

His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of peace.

These are four messianic titles of Jesus Christ that are self-explanatory, Counselor, God Almighty, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace

APPLICATION:

Jesus Christ is God’s perfect Christmas gift to humanity. This is a free gift, given by grace, by faith, and by Christ alone. A gift is only a gift until you receive it. You receive this gift by faith and by believing in Christ. Have you received God’s perfect Christmas gift for you? You can receive it right now, where ever you are. In a simple but sincere prayer, tell God that you are a sinner and that you believe that Jesus died for you on the cross to pay the punishment of your sins for you. By faith, surrender your life to Him. This is the first step to salvation, but it is the most important one. If you said this prayer, find a local bible believing church, and tell the pastor about your decision. Worship, serve, and grow your faith in the local church.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Son as the perfect Christmas gift to us 2000 years ago. Thank You for salvation, justification, sanctification, and eternal life. Thank You that human beings will live forever more because of Christmas day, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
